Oh wow that's not as much as I was thinking! That 12.5x12.5 prop you use is the 4 bladed one? Sorry for all my dumb questions......just trying to make a decision on what to do! Because I do love my YS engines! Just wish fuel wasn't so expensive! There's good and bad about both! Ugh! Lol

I finally started the Mustang today for the first time. It's running great. Second picture is the Eflite Mustang beside my TopFlite Mustang kit.
The Eflite has a Saito FA-72 and the TopFlite has a Saito 120S.
I'll maiden the Eflite Mustang next time I go to the flying field.
I can't wait! After flying this plane as an electric plane for two years, I'm excited to see how much nicer it will fly with the Saito 72.

Well I'm on the hunt for a YS 70 or 91....Danpos both your P-51s are lookin good! I use to have 5 TF P51s at one time! I love those birds! Been thinking about getting the arf! But I need to get my e-flite done and I have the e-flite F-4 I have to finish.....but I haven't started it yet so I guess I could leave it in the box and or sell it!? And get a TF......hmmmmmm

What are you guys using for COG? 3 1/2" ?
My maiden went really bad.
It was very windy and I thought I would try it anyway. I recall this plane as elextric can handle the wind really well.
On take off a bad gust pushed it sideways enough that I veered to the left a little.
I hadn't yet increased the throttle much so I know it's not torque effect. I corrected and went right... then another strong gust enough to push the plane hard again. So I aborted and rolled it out.
But couldn't avoid hitting the fence. A little damage to a wing forward spar. Nothing much.
So I took off again and the plane flew bad. It was very hard to control. The ailerons weren't operating right at all. I had a hard time even turning the plane around. So at a very far distance I throttled back and landed it out in the field. It was so far away that it looked like a small bird.
I managed to bring it down with minimal damage to the fusilage.
I repaired it last night.
So before I take it up again I want to go over everything, including changing the receiver.

I finally got around to flying the P-51B again. This time with a Saito FA-56. I removed the FA-72 to put that into my 50 size Hangar 9 Cosair until I rebuild the Saito 100 that was in that.
It balanced at 3 1/2" with the 56 just by putting the receiver battery in the scoop.
It flew very well. Nice take off and landed soooo much nicer than it does with electric gear in it. It doesn't even need flaps! The spinning prop just tugs it along nice.
The glow engine is much better in this plane than electric gear in my opinion.
I bet if it would have been produced under Hangar 9 with a glow option instead of Eflite this plane would have been very successful.
I couldn't get the engine well enough to know if I will be happy with the performance of the 56 over the 72.
Took the P-51B to the field again today for a few more flights, I tried a 12x8x2 on the Saito 56 and the rpm's weren't there. Next will be a 12x6x2.
I'm afraid I won't be happy with the 56 and will end up going back to the 72. If I do that I'll need to add weight to the tail.

Is anyone still flying this plane?
I took mine out again this morning for a few hours and it went great.
I actually lost it in the fog for about 20 seconds! I listened to the exhaust sound to know which direction I was going!
Pure luck and the fact I didn't move the stick at all. I was in a partial turn when I lost sight of it.
I lightened it up to 6 lbs 5oz by changing the retracts and put an Evolution 12x6x2 propeller on it.
It flew much better with that prop than the MAS 12x8x2. Speed is good and it has enough power now. I'm pulling 9,900 rpm on the ground instead of 9,400 and in the air it really pulls strong now.
It sounds great!
The Saito FA-56 is a good choice for this plane. I had to add only a 1/2 oz to the tail to balance at 3 1/4" COG.
Next trip I'll take a camcorder and record the flight.
I'm finally content with the setup and still believe that this plane should have had a glow option when it was produced instead of only electric.

Sorry for the bad quality video. Homemade headcam... But at least you can hear and see it fly with the Saito 56.
You will see the air scoop fall off and then hear a bad clattering. It's not the engine. The wing halves seperated and a previous repair let go. I was only a foot off the ground and almost touching down when the wing literally fell off! I was going so slow that there wasn't any new damage.
I can't believe how lucky I am! I'll do a better job repairing it and get it back up in the air for a better video soon.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgLj9Hi9-HM Too bad it's discontinued. It's such as nice flying plane (especially with the Saito 56 in it) that I would buy a new one if I could.

Tomorrow I maiden mine. Finally. Over two years later. I'll try the 11x9 two blade on the Saito .56.
I had to put the battery in the scoop to get it at 3.5" from leading edge at the white stripe on the wing. Is that where you are measuring yours?

The Saito 56 works very well with the evolution 12x6 prop. However I never tried a 11x9?
I haven'y had any issues with fuel getting in the wheel wells. If it did I would either use Balsarite or thinned epoxy like I used on the firewall.
Let us know how the maiden goes. Record it if you can.
I have had several flights after the wing came off in flight. I think the Saito 56 is a great engine for this plane.

If you are at 3.25" at the wing root, and I am at 3.5" at the white stripe, our COG are significantly different. Maybe I should be worried...
I closed the holes in the exhaust-side wheel well with fiberglass and coated the painted wood with thinned epoxy. Now I wait for the weather.

My maiden was tail heavy as hell..,.
I will fix that and another couple issues...
you can see the down elevator for level flight...
