A coworker gave me an E-Flite Super Cub 25e that he had started but never found the time to complete, then his interests changed to obtaining a private pilot's license...anyway I prefer the sound of an engine and would rather clean the slime off a plane than charge batteries so I decided to install a glow engine. I had an OS 48FS Surpass that wasn't in anything so used it.

First I removed the box that the electric motor was to be mounted to. Then I made the firewall in two pieces that sandwich the original firewall. This glow engine can be removed and electric power installed if desired. The firewall is held in alignment with pins fabricated from bamboo skewers that are 1/8" in diameter.

Next a friend and I made a spacer (the white piece that mounts between the firewall and engine mount). It is from a piece of HDMW that we surfaced on his small mill. It has a taper of about 3.5 degrees and is oriented so it gives equal amounts of down and right thrust. (The box that was removed had the down/right thrust).

The plane balanced without adding any weight, I simply had to move the receiver battery, a 5 AA cell NIMH pack.

It has two flights on it, flies well.

I was pretty happy with the results, particularly since I was literally engineering it "on the fly" (pardon the pun ).

Battle Short: I recently got an Eflite Super Cub and am thinking about converting to glow. I have a few questions if you don't mind: size fuel tank and location; approximate angles of your manufactured spacer; weight after with full fuel; anything you would do different. Thanks.

Nice and neat install of the OS 48. You have a great airplane now, it will certainly sound alot better with that OS in it.

very good install. just a suggestion but i would close off the other side hole in the cowl with clear tape of balsa and paint it. also the carb intake on the bottom. Engine will get very warm with those open

Hello, I have a super cub 25e, put engine 50 saito, I be in medellin colombia at an altitude of 1,495m (4904,856 ft), this engine will be enough for the plane?

Thanks to all for the compliments over the years. I've been away from the hobby, my last login prior to tonight was May 17, 2015. Life just got in the way as it tends to.

Unfortunately the Cub tip stalled on about the 5th or 6th flight while I was landing so I got rid of it when I moved.

I realize this is literally years late, perhaps it will still be of use to someone in the future.

The fuel tank was mounted directly behind the firewall on the black shelf (4th pic?). I do not recall the size, it was the largest I could physically fit. Seems like it was something like 10-12 oz range, rectangular.

The spacer, I believe, was 3.5 degrees as I described in the original post. I oriented it so the thrust was in the desired direction, down and right.

I do not recall the takeoff weight, but I remember I was able to balance it without adding any weight I just moved the receiver battery until I got CG where I wanted it. The battery was just aft of where the pilot seat would have mounted.
