Installing bearings
In an engine with the crankcase split so you have two pieces, fore and aft. installing bearings vex me. I am taking about chainsaw cases with bearings at both ends. Normally I heat the bearing, with a heat gun, and drop it on to the crank. Repeat on the other side. I then cool the crank/bearing assembly in the freezer. Then heat the case halves and assemble. The thing that bothers me is that the bearings always end up in a bind fore and aft. Normally that works out as the engine is run.
Would I do better to install the bearings in the case half first? It seems like they usually drop over the crank easier than they press into the cranks case.

RE: Installing bearings
I always put the bearings in the case halves first myself. Then if you sense any binding after assembly, warm up the whole case and crank assembly and gently tap the crank with a plastic or lead mallet. They will usually loosen right up, but I rarely have to do it.
