Help! What engine is this??
Hi guys,
I've got a really cute little engine that roughly measures 22cc. But I don't know what it is and would like to find out. It is brand new, except it doesn't have a crankshaft. I need to know what it is so I can check price and availability of a crank for it. Anybody know?
It has virtually no casting numbers, marks, decals, etc. other than "EC 021" on the base of the cylinder in one spot.
What is it?
Thanks,
AV8TOR

The crankcase has a "Zenoah" look about it. The strange, (but cool) thing about it is the round cylinder fins. I've searched and searched and not found anything like it on the internet. I know the early 14 and 16cc Echo engines had round fins, but this isn't an Echo.
By measuring the bore and "guesstimating" the stroke, it is around 22cc.

Nope, I don't believe it is an Echo. I have changed crankshafts between the 16cc, the various models of 21cc, and the 23.6 (24cc) Echo engines. They interchange except for the fact that the wrist pin size is different on the 16cc.
I just tried to put an Echo 21cc crank in this engine. The counterweights and stroke seem correct, but the crank is about .5 mm too wide for the crankcase, though the shaft diameter is correct for the bearings. I could machine down the width of the crank, but there is a more difficult problem. The rod is about 8 mm too short for this engine.
So, any other ideas as to what engine this might be? I think the round cylinder fins are a key clue, but I haven't found anything in my web searches to tell me what the engine is. It is brand new, but has no markings, decals, nothing on it. I did notice that it has Japanese crank bearings in it.
I received the engine like this, new but without a crank. Need to know what it is so maybe I can source a crankshaft for it.

It reminds me of an Olson and Rice engine that was on a compact generator I once had. Can't say for sure as I no longer have the little engine, long gone! This outfit built military Drone engines as well as
hobby engines of various sizes, long gone now. Just a thought?

That Orange color sure does imply it is a Stihl engine or some sort. It looks like it was off of a trimmer too.
Unfortunately I am not very familiar with their makes and models.

Stihl parts lists are online but it takes a lot of digging to find them. They only release those parts lists to dealers.. I don't understand why in today's market, but what do ya do? If you have a buddy at a local saw shop, he'd be the guy I'd be talking to.

It is not one of the O&R variations as the one that has a round cylinder has collector style exhaust with a single tube outlet.

The crankcase looks a bit different, but may have been used for another application.
The Stihl FS 65 has a bore of 30mm and stroke of 28mm, capacity of 19.8cc (1.21 ci), how do your measurements compare?

I am staying with my brother and don't have immediate access to my things, but I have a little Kawasaki engine that I remember has a round cylinder like this one. It is 22cc. I'll go get it this weekend and compare it to this one.
Thanks for any and all input,

the case looks a lot like the little kawasaki. looks like it has the same cast lugs for the old points ignition around the crank bearing area and the machined nose looks similar as well. the cylinder on the kawa however doesn't have the four cut outs for access to the screws.
cylinder is also held on with four screws which means it should be a higher end engine. the straight plug is also interesting.
whatever it is it is for sure japanese in origin, nothing stihl ever made looks like that.

I was finally able to compare this one to my Kawasaki TF-22 engine and they are nearly identical. The cylinder is slightly different as you mentioned Zagnut. I'm going to pull my other Kawasaki apart and make sure the crankshaft fits the one in question. Then I'll order a crank for it. I found one on the web for 12 bucks. It is going to make a really nice little 22cc conversion engine. The ports look generous; I'll check the port timing when I am ready to build the two engines and post the numbers if anyone is interested. Too bad these engines are rare to find. My brother and I have gone through hundreds of yard equipment machines and only come across these two.....

Wow, I guess I'm screwed. I searched numerous places and the crankshaft for this little 22.5cc Kawasaki is anywhere from $200.00 to $275.00. That's ridiculous and far more than I would ever pay. I don't understand why they make the engine parts so terribly expensive. Just to sell more new machines I guess. Bummer.....
