In the test runs that I made with the OS 60, I used klotz @ 18% with 25% Methanol and the rest gasoline. I didn't see any seperation at all. The klotz being soluble in both methanol and gasoline kept everything in solution. However the 5% ether will do the same thing with other oils as long as the oil content is not more than 2% or so.

this is an awesome thread. my case has no mount studs for the coil so i am seriously looking at this setup. im wondering how you are starting this setup? you said with an electric starter, but what exactly is your sequence? turn the voltage on and then hit it with the starter? isnt there a high chance it will detonate as soon as you light up the glow plug if its in the compresed stroke? and what about backfiring or running the wrong way because it fires too soon/late? any issues with this?

im going to see if i can whip up one of these spark plug adapters.

keet up the good work guys.

none so ever, it will start just like a glow engine, try it and see what you think about it.

from one of rc ignitions comments i understand that amsoil 100-1 will mix with metanol the same as gasoline so is it possible to run a ryobi at 80meth 20 gas 100-1 mix? it is hard to find oil othewr than klotz or gas turbine synthetic that will mix with metanol or methylhydrate

Hi guys,

I was seeking for some way add gas to glow fuel to cut costs. But after read the topic, I am thinking to not use any glow fuel at all.
Here in Brazil, a gallon of unleaded gas costs US$8.30. It has anhydrous ethanol at a proportion of 22%, I read previously that a glow plug will ignite the ethanol by catalization , is it correct ? So, it will be only necessary to add castor oil to make a suitable fuel to substitute the glow fuel.

Please, is it feasible ?

Thanks

Nelson

How would a MDS 1.48 work for Alky-gas-mix on Glow? Thanks Capt,n

The high gas content of 78% will probably prevent the plug catalitic action. More so, while ethanol is not as strong in keeping the plug lit like methanol.
It is worth a try though.

I would think the use of a 1.5 volt glowplug driven with 2.4 volts should give a lot of help to the catalitic action of the plug. The thing I am wondering about....will the plug burn out sooner than it should? I would imagine there are a lot of glow plugs to try also. How about a GlowBee....I think that is the one with a flat coil??? Not sure. Keep up this very intesting project. Thanks Capt,n

Hi Converts! Ive tried the glow plug with 2 x1.2 2300ma batteries and it doesn't burn the plug it helps "alot" with the gasoline burning, E85 fuel is 85% ethanol + 15% gasoline it works good with a regular idle bar plug if you put some nitro 5% otherwise you will need to use the battery for the loww idle transition.

Soooo, 1 gallon of E85 mixed at 50:1 with Amsoil + 5% Nitro + Idle bar glow plug = a usable fuel without using an on-board glow battery ?

The battery wil last aprox. 2 - 3 tanks of 16 oz fuel (aprox 1 hour) but you can make 2 or 3 2 battery packs and replace as needed for a days flight, besides the pack doesnt weigh much if you use NiMhi batteries.

As for Antiques question Amsoil will not mix very well with E85 alone thats why I use 60% regular gasoline with 35% E85 to make oil mixing easyer otherwise you will need CASTOR oil to mix with the E85 fuel/Nitro by it self.

Hey Captain! I think that the MDS 1.48 would work great but you will need to use a Higher contet of oil and I don,t know hog it will affect the burning of gasoline if you used Amsoil at 30:1 ratio it might work but then again is just my guess, another thing I would try would be using a castor amsoil mix at 30-40:1 ratio and see how it works, I have a Magnum 1.80 that will give it a try when I can find some time to do so, please let me know what you find out.

Hi !

Interesting paper about using ethanol on full size converted engines http://www.webs1.uidaho.edu/niatt/pu...rts/KLK319.pdf . Please pay attention to page 20, "Catalytic Igniter Concept". Very technical, but a worth reading .

In fact, I worried about the toxicity of the methanol and here ethanol are found in a any gas station, at the price of US$5.40/gallon. It's like a E95.

Regards,

Nelson

To keep this thread alive,,,,,,,,, WVARN1957 & AERO NUT In your opinion, would a mix of 60% gas + 35% denatured alcohol + 5% nitro mixed with AMSOIL at 50:1 be workable ?

I don't see why it shouldn't work, when you take into consideration that denatured alcohol is PURE ETHANOL + METHANOL no water, my mixture of 60%gasoline + 35%E85 + 5% nitro will give just about the same proportions of 65% gasoline +35% denatured alcohol +5% nitro. (E85 fuel is 85% Ethanol + 15%gasoline and if my math is not wrong 15% of 35% is = 35% x .15 = 5.25 gasoline, so that will make my mixture at 65.25% gasoline + 29.75% Ethanol + 5% nitro), just make sure you make your fuel mixture at these proportions then go ahead and treat the whole mixture at a 40:1 or 50:1 oil content ratio if you use amsoil or any other good quality synthetic oil (Mobil's MX2T racing oil or MAXIMA motorcycle synthetic with castor or VP racing castor oil)

I don't know of any reason why it would not work. Ethanol (denatured alcohol) is as readily catalized as methanol. I don't know about the amsol solubility in the mixture or the ratio. I do know that Klotz is readily soluble in both gasoline and alcohol.

Very Good thead!! Does anyone have a reliable gasser working yet? I am a totally Moron when it comes to mixing fuels but I am working on a 45cc convert that I would like to try a glow plug with no ignition.

HI converts! I've been using my 60%gasoline/35% E85/5%Nitro for more than 2 months now and the engine is running very good the engine is a featherlite 25 with a MA 15x8 prop mounted on an Excite 90 and having a ball with it, I cant tell the numbers on rpms because they stole all my equipment about a month ago but luckylly I had a vanguard 6 channel radio stored for a long time, changed batteries bought some high torque servos and I bought a sligthly damaged Ecite 90 for $70.00 (very minor damage, two smashed wing ribs which I glued back togheter and voala ready to fly) but the way the engine sounds and by my own experience I tink I should be getting around the lows 8000, I will measure later as soon as I can buy myself another tachometer, by the way my friend made an insert to convert it to glo out of a NPT bronze T adapter I think thats the kind of thread used in gas connections it goes into the thread very well and then it thightens I think is kind of conic, but it works very fine I'll try to take some pic's as soon as I can and post them here for all to see.
So please give it a try and you wont be dissapointed besides think of all the weight that you'll be saving by trying this configuration.

I wonder if it would work without the nitro in a high compression engine.....

Ok so let see if I got this correct.
Here is what I think I understand.
A good working blend of fuel is 60% 87 octane gasoline, 35% E85, and 5% Nitro.
A glow plug with NO on board ignition???
NO modifactions to the carb??
NO firing ignition what so ever??

I am sorry to be a pain but I am going out today to try and find the stuff I need.

Were might a person find E85 and what exactly is it??
Were might a person find nitro??
Again sorry to be a pain but I think most of us dont know were to find that stuff.

It does work without nitro, but if you can add some don't hesitate in doing so it gives it more punch.
