Default Automotive compression gauge

Can you use an automotive type compression gauge to test the compression of small engines? I read somewhere that you have to use a compression gauge made especially for small engines.

An automotive type is fine. The results you get will of course vary depending on the exhaust port timing and the static compression ratio. Under 70 is worn out and would be difficult to start, 100 or more is good.
