Poulan chainsaw with SAS

Default Poulan chainsaw with SAS

I'm looking into my Poulan chainsaw (PPB4218 SAS) and the thing has very strange addition to the carb. When the throttle lever is pushed to the end it opens additional butterfly located in the channel above the carb, opening the air to the engine (bypassing the carb ???).

I believe this is what it is called "Secondary Air System". What is it for and what to do about it during conversion?

I believe that it is designed to meet California emmissions. I seen a post here where the guy blocked off the aux port with a custom manifold and used a standard carb setup. Just check the duration of the main intake port. The duration should be between 110 and 145 degrees. The 2 barrel Toro trimmer engine has a simular intake system. The secondary system is just blocked off and a standard carb used.
