    Yo,
    Prop Nut (or anyone else with a G-62), what type of numbers do you get on a G-62 and with what size props? If this Stihl is indeed roughly the equivalent of a G-62 I am thinking of a 1/4 scale DH4 or 9a or a 1/3rd scale Nieuport 27. This is after I finish the other five planes that are in various stages of completion in my shop,of course, so it could be five years or so at my rate.Yeah,I could see one in a DV.

    I played around with it a little more today,so far my personal best is six flips to get it started.

    Here are the numbers on my G-62. All with a large 3-chamber silencer.

    MenzS 22x10: 6600rpm
    MenzS 24x8: 6200rpm
    MenzS 24x10: 5800rpm
    MenzS 26x8: 5300rpm
    MenzS 24x10:6700rpm, but with a tuned pipe.

    The Stihl sounds to be a little down on power compared to a G-62, but 6200 rpm on a 22x10 also depends a lot on the brand. It should be plenty for a 1:3 WWI biplane, and with a nice sound too.

    My numbers are almost exactly the same as Pelle's. I am also using Menzs props.

    I am using a JFX 22x10, which supposedly the same as an XOAR. I am still running the top end really rich so we will see what happens when I lean it out a bit.I still want to get some more fuel through before I do that though.

    I set the top end and am getting 6300rpm on the same prop.My problem is I can't get a consistent idle,it surges up and down.I double checked my intake manifold for leaks and have swapped three different carbs. I have set the idle mixture from so lean it quits to too rich it quits and anything in between it surges. It sure seems like a leak but if it is, I have run out of ideas of where to look for one.Any ideas??

    John,
    Have you checked the whole engine for leaks or just around the carb area? A leak anywhere on the crankcase, seals, etc. will cause wierd things to happen,

    Perhaps on a two stroke,but the lower part of the crankcase is vented anyway,so I don't think that's the problem.The head is one piece as well(no head gasket) so that can't be it. It's gotta be the intake area.I'll quadruple check everything there,

    Fire up the BBQ, I have to eat some crow!!! While running the engine at idle I put my finger over the vent nipple and sure enough it effects the idle RPM. Now what do I do? I am not running the external pulse line with the WYK carb as it is set up now. Should I block it off or is there a way I can use this line on a WYK carb?Blocking it off doesn't seem like a good idea but what do I now? Wow, do I feel like a moron.My apologies.

    I am working on assembling a second Stihl and have come up with this.

    I ran the crankcase line to the intake manifold and have a hole going through the manifold to the pulse opening for the carb. Is this OK as is or do I also need to make a groove to the intake area?

    Going back to my first Stihl, I put a length of tubing on the crankcase nipple and played around with it while the engine was running.I found I can squeeze off that tube and get a nice smooth idle. Now whether to just block it off or use it for a pulse line like on engine #2. HMMMM........

    Well, I blocked off the vent line and ran it.Very nice. I still get 62-6300 RPM at the top end and it idles well at 16-1700 Rpm. It will idle lower (POP.....POP.....POP.....POP....) but it begins to vibrate more than I like. I am going to try a 23x8 and a 24x10 prop and see what kind of #'s I get. I also want to try the WYK-33 carb (15mm as opposed to the 10.5mm carb I have on now) )to see if I can match the G-62 RPM #'s.

    An added bonus is that now I can hand flip it 2-3 times cold (after priming of course)and it will start. Warmed-up it usually starts on the first flip. I am beginning to like this engine!!

    The wyk-33 seems to be to big. It runs great up until 2/3-3/4 throttle and then just starts dying out. No fear, this engine has more than enough power for the first two planes I plan to put them in. I am redoing the intake manifold to use the crankcase pulse (like my second one) and made up a straight tube exhaust. I will test run it again and if all is the same,I will put it into my 1/4 scale DVII.
    Further down the road I may play with different carbs again to see if I can get a little more power for the DH4, but that is a ways off.

    OK,the pulse line from the crankcase seems to work,although I did have to re-adjust the mixture settings,towards the lean side.My exhaust pipe is a first -time( for me ) job using Alumaweld.So far,so good.

    Now that it runs well,I see no other option than to put it in the DVII!
    PS: Spent the rest of the day cleaning up my mess that I call a shop, as you can see

    The wyk-33 seems too be too big either way. I got good results with both of the smaller carbs.

    My thinking if it was pumping better it could be running richer.

    Sometimes it's hard to tell if you are going lean or rich.

    I just purchased a new Carb. for mine.
    It's for a 32cc engine. It should be here by Wed.

    I hope to give it a try before my 2 week vacation starts on the first.

    It'll fit in the DVII. The Stihl really isn't any bigger than the Honda GX35.
