Thanks j, I should have looked back in your thread before asking. How much does the D VII weigh again?
It's in the 23 lb range. I can't really weigh it now as I am stripping it and re-covering it.

JTISCH

I am interested in converting a Stihl 65cc 4 stroke. Are there any pointers you can offer or is this going to be pretty much a straight through process of liberating the engine from a leaf blower and removing excess metal?
I hate re-inventing the wheel so hope that you can share some of your experience.

Thanks

Joshua

The two things that stick in my mind are the intake and the shaft thread. The intake is oval shaped and there are no lugs. The thread size is 11x1.0 (IIRC)and the taps are hard to find. Everything else is pretty straightforward.

I got an edited version of the DVII video in the mail yesterday so I just have to put it on u-tube.

I have the vlc player as well, no joy. I didn't shoot the video, so all I have is the dvd. I was thinking it might be my drive, but it runs my cd-roms, even video on cd-r.

Not all disk players are for DVD. Many of them are CD only. You might need to buy and install a DVD player.

Hmmm, my drive says dvd on it and in "my computer" it says dvd drive. I am no expert on these things though.

Has there been any updateson the Stihl 65CC ? My surfing found the 65 4stroke comes in the BR 599, 550 and 600. are they available without buying the blower. I would love to have one of these on my GeeBee Y 97" when I put it together. I am practicing with the 82" version with an original G23 with CH ign. Best place to buy?

My local Stihl dealer sells new shortblocks for @ $285,IIRC. You can find them on Flea-bay, but be careful. If they have any broken parts Stihl parts are very $$$$. I Think if you built a 65 from individual parts you would end up spending several grand.

Surprisingly, this thread seems dead as interesting as it is. I recently obtained this FS110 Stihl 4-mix engine. I proceeded to cut off all the extra aluminum, leaving a pretty light engine. It's 31.4cc (I think). I'd love to convert it. I've done many 2 stroke conversions, and I have a lathe and mill to do all the metal work. Some comments in this thread indicated Stihl 4-mixes, at least some of them, run backwards. As viewed looking straight at the taper end of the crankshaft. And backwards means clockwise. HOWEVER, the Stihl animations show the engine running clockwise as viewed from the taper crank end. Which is right? Or are some Stihls backwards and others ccw? Any information is appreciated. Here's a pic of the engine.

And here's a link that I think clearly shows a 4-mix animation running counter-clockwise as viewed from the tapered crank end. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yN5BW...eature=related

The 32 and 36cc engines run counter clockwise when viewed from the crank taper end. The 65cc engines run backwards.

This is a 32cc I recently sold.

My 65's run CCW. I suppose if you mounted the prop hub on the magneto/flywheel end, then they would run CW. When the hub is mounted on the fan end, then you have an engine that turns CCW. Granted the mounting lugs are larger on the front of the engine (there are lugs front and back), but the smaller rear mounting lugs have held up fine. The fan end also provides a much bigger shaft on which to mount the prop hub.

Hey, thanks for the info. Sorry I didn't reply sooner but I though I'd subscribed to the thread and that no one had answered. I think it was RCU glitching again.

Anyway, I'm really really glad to hear my 32cc Stihl 4-mix runs ccw viewed from the taper end. I wasn't looking forward to making a hub run true on that stubby little straight end. As it stands now, I'll put the magnet ring back there now.

Just curious, why did you sell your 32cc? Does it run so poorly that I should not waste my time on it?

What diameter venturi carb did you use? Did you have any problem with oil fouling the pulse tube? How did you vent the crankcase? How many degrees BTDC did you set your timing?

Thanks in advance for your info. I'm sure I'll have more questions as this project progresses.

I had three of them and converted two for sale. The last one I am keeping for sure. I used the stock carb, and I think this is a key to making the four stroke engines run well. I had to raise the regulator lever a bit to make it run rich enough, and change the high speed check valve in the carb. Then it ran great! Like I said, I'm keeping one for myself. I used the magneto ignition on the two I sold, but will be using electronic ignition on mine. Power was pretty decent on the ones I did. If you want, PM me your e-mail and I will send you a video of one of mine running. I only had 18 x 8 and a 16 x 8 props on hand to test run mine, but I think an 18 x 6 would be ideal, and turn around 78 to 7900 rpms. A good bit more power than the Honda GX31 that I did a while back, and much lighter.

Interesting info. Good rpms too. Was the original carb a barrel rotary valve type? Or a typical WT type carb with a throttle plate, and a hi and lo speed needle? What is the make and model is the carb, as mine doesn't have a carb yet. Need to get one. Appreciate it. By the way, when do go electronic ignition, without the inertia of the flywheel, and with advance, you should get much better RPM. Look to hear from you.

It is a special carb. Zama C1Q style. It has kind of a booster diaphragm setup on it that helps with the pulse to the fuel pump. Butterfly type carb with twin adjustment needles. Too bad yours doesn't have one, because I don't imagine they are cheap. I'll try to get a photo of mine on here later.

Send me your e-mail address and I'll send that video. It shows a lot of detail, as well as the engine running.
