Holesawing magnetos
This sounds easy.....
I have a homelite 25cc with metal backplate (short shaft). Brand new. I have magneto-stlye prop adaptor. I have CDI ignition. Want to use the centre of the mag to screw the driver down onto the taper.
So I'm looking at this flywheel and my holesaw and seeing a world of pain and anguish.....
Anyone actually done this!??

RE: Holesawing magnetos
has anyone measured the taper of the stock flywheel bore so that one could make a new "flywheel" instead of hacking up the one he/she already has? (as a possible swap in case the front of the plane needs weight, on goes the flywheel)

RE: Holesawing magnetos
Heres 2 pics of mine after i drilled out the center of flywheel with the hole saw.i first made a dowel and pointed it on my grinding wheel to match the taper then when i started the hole saw it went through the dowel and kept the hole saw straight until it started to bite in.I have a lathe now so i trued it up after wards. If ya had to you could take a bolt and use a rubber cone washer similier to the ones found on the sink risers underneath your sink faucet and use it to hold the center true and then just use a file against the side of it while turning it in your drill press.you could also use the center dowel that you made and use a bolt with a nut on the bottom and then turn it that way.i might have to post a pic if ya cant figure it out.its like using a milling machine free hand.it wont be perfect but would work for a cdi.

I use a crank from another engine that I took the lobe off of and bolt the flywheel to it then chuck it in the lathe

2 essential items that I don't have! [:@]
I have, however, found a use for old MDS engines (or NEW ones ). The prop driver has a taper the same as the trimmer, except it's a few tenths larger in diameter. I cut some brass shim into a the right shape (full chinese fan) and used that to fill the gap.
This clamps up fine. The diameter is not quite as big as I'd like for magnet mounting and I'm on the lookout for a larger one..... (glow engine prop driver with a taper).....

Good work. I've made several that way. Just be sure to make them about the size in KI8FR's pictures. I made one a little too small in diameter, and it broke when I tightened down the prop adapter. They need to have enough "meat" on them so that they can take being tighted onto the taper without splitting.

I did it like that so I had all the room I needed for the magnet. I did not think about it brakeing. I know that now so when I make then for gas/glow I will not do that now lol
Thanks for that very inportent info.

If you are making the hub for Gas/Glo...you can press fit a metal sleeve on the outside diameter for more strength. They will not split then. Capt,n
