On the SE5, I have the tail feathers built and half the wings. Put it aside for a while to work on my Texan. Also thinking of going gas/glow on the Ryobi to shave some weight off it. The fuse will need some redesign to accomodate the Ryobi but I think it will be a good combo as it will fit in the narrow fuse. It is just a tad longer than the glow motors the plane was designed for. Still pondering on how I am going to do it.

Placed an order today at Horizon for a glow plug adapter and a couple of their F style glow plugs. Since I already have the Ryobi mounted up on my test stand, I will test it first before odering more parts for the Poulan.

Did any one find the 10/10 fuel at tower hobbies and know a brand name or part number? I went to tower hobbies yesterday and they had alot of different fuels but the guy there didn't know any more then I do about the oil contents of the fuels and I don't know anything at all. I would really like to test acouple of my engines and all I need is the fuel.

it's usually labeled "fuel for large supertigre engines" at least that's what Omega calls it...

Tower carries Omega Sidewinder for cars. It has 12% oil. A bit heavy, but it will work.

you can try your regular 15/18 fuel (15 nitro/18 oil) ata 1/5 glow fuel and gasoline (1 patr glow 5 parts gasoline) this should give you a 2.5% nitro, 3% oil, 11% methanol and the rest gasoline that is if my math is not wrong.

OK I went to the tower hobbies seach at the top of the page and looked for the fuel. The only side winder fuel I found was 20%n/12% oil ? The large super tigre fuel that was 10%,but they did not list the oil content or amount?does anyone know how much oil is in this fuel? I did how ever find some Trinity monster horse power that was 10%n/12% oil.the part number for this is lxuu70. Tower hobbies is the only hobby shop that is close to me 50 miles.
thanks again

Clocknut,

The Trinity fuel is the one they are referring to. It is a car fuel.

Went to the local Hobie shop again today and they didn't have any thing I can use.So what if I take some 20/20 and mix it half and half with the methanol and then mix that with the high test gas????

What is the minimum amount of methanol that can be used to run gas/glow. In other words, could I mix my 10/20 glow fuel 1/2 gallon to 2 gallons of premium without adding more methanol?

I was doing a search on the internet for methanol and came across a website that said that the "HEET" brand of gasoline line antifreeze is made up of 99% methanol and can be found at parts houses. A call to my local parts house and found that they do carry it in stock. About $2.00 a 12 once bottle. Could this be used as a substitute for methanol in our mix?

I can't really advise you on mixes other than the standard Gas/Glow mix. The rest is all subject to experimentation.

To convert 20/20 fuel into 10/10, you would mix it 1 to 1 with pure methanol. In other words, add one gallon of 20/20 to one gallon of methanol; to result in two gallons of 10/10 fuel. This could then be mixed at the normal mixture of 1 part 10/10 glow fuel to two parts of high test gasoline to get the Gas/Glow fuel we use.

If "HEET" is indeed 99% methanol, I imagine it would work. Once again, feel free to experiment with other combinations, mixtures, etc., but I can't advise how they will work out, only experimentation will tell.

Good luck,

Picked up 3 bottles of HEET at Walmart yesterday at 1.28 a 12 once bottle. Enough to experiment with. The label says Methyl Alcohol. I assume that is methanol. My first mixture will be 3 onces of Heet- 3 onces of 10/20 glow fuel and 12 onces of premium gas. I think this works out to 2.5% nitro and 10% oil. What do yall think?

Give it a try. Your math is off though. You have about 3% oil, which is fine.

Gave it a try with my Ryobi today. Could only get it to run backwards hand flipping. Running backwards caused the prop hub to unscrew and prop to fly off. Luckily it did not hit anything. Tried to start it with my starter. Every time it popped the prop hub came loose. Can't seem to get it tight enough. Without a flywheel, there is nothing to hold onto while tightening. Ran out of time. Will try again later.

Take the glow plug adapter out, and insert a length of soft cotton rope. The piston will come up and hit and compress the rope, and stop the engine from turning over so that you can get the prop hub tight. Use Loctite, and let it set overnight before use.

I know a lot of people will say do not try this. It is to hard on the engine. That is not true. If you use the rope it will not hurt the enine. In facked the force that you put on the engine to make the prop hub tight is about 1/10th of the force the engine has on the crank and rod when it is running. This is the best way to do this. Av8tor know what he is talking about.

I just put this in here cuz it seems as if it is a bad thing to do. but it is not.

I purchased some Heet on base today for $1.25.
I noticed there were two different ones. Red and a Yellow.
The red was rubbing Alcohol, Iso… what ever it is and the yellow is Methyl Alcohol.

I have some 20/20 and a Mac than was ran on Gas-Glow the last time it was ran.
I’ll give it a shot also to see how it works out.

But it will probably be Monday.

Yes, Walmart had both colors also. The yellow one is the one to get. I had no problem getting the engine to fire when hand flipping. It just wanted to start backwards. My battery was low for my electric starter so could not get it to spin over fast enough to ensure it started in the right direction. I think the starter will be the way to go but still have to get the prop hub on tight first. Going flying today so will have to wait for more next week.

My friends poulan 42cc fires backwards often, i found by flicking the prop backwards toward the compression stroke will fire the engine forward everytime.
