GAS/GLOW HOW TO....

RE: GAS/GLOW HOW TO....
I would do the 10% oil in the mix. I have used more than that but it was just a test. If I remember right that is more by a fair amount than AV8TORs mix is for oil...but it should be ok. Just use a oil like Klotz that mixes good in various fuels and does not leave hardlly any carbon in the engine. I never had a plug go bad with that oil also. Capt,n PS I will look up some data I may have on Tartan engines.

""ONE part of the glow fuel to TWO parts of the high test, (premium) gasoline.""

how about running my Super Tartan "Tartan" 44cc glow twin on Gas/Glow,,
I ask because it's such a higher compression engine than the gasoline engines, I believe it's a 11 to 1 ratio, do you think an OS F plug will be hot enough ??
(EDITED) of-course this would have to be mixed with no Nitro as this engine was designed not to run Nitro !!
yes the Super Tartan Twin has Needle Bearing Rod Ends

Never run.Notice the stout build.
I would not worry too much, about adding alot of extra oil to these guy’s standard gas/glow mix due to it's construction. But that's just me...Your milage may vary.
As for the high compression, you might cut out a couple new head gaskets ~2x the std.thickness.
Mine is just a flat aluminum ring.

18x10 at 8400 seems a bit optimistic to me.
Anybody know?

"Here's the innards, and"Tips"paperwork of a single SuperTartan glow I have in the shop."
Please take note, that the included "Tips" sheet, listing the prop size is for the "single" not the twin.

yes, I understood that, I have both the single and twin..
what does everyone use for a prop on their OS 120 4st,,
Jim Cline has flown the Tartans more than anyone inside the US, he told me (on the phone) that the Super Tartan single is a little more powerful than a "good" OS 120, it would be more like a 130..
I don't know why they want it turned that high, it doesn't have that much for an Exhaust Timing, I don't think the single will even turn a 17x10 that high, the Saito 125 turns an APC 16/6 at 8000..

RE: GAS/GLOW HOW TO....
The “tips†sheet pictured in post 104,and shipped with my 22cc single years ago, must be for the 44cc twin .
18x10 is Zenoah G-38 territory. From that mfg. specs: â€Benchmark prop 18x10 APC 7,300â€
Wasp,I understand that you have both engines w/ manuals, and know this stuff. Someone else may also have the single w/o manual, trying to spin too much prop like I would have after reading the paperwork received.

OK,,
I know the Twin (s) are screaming little monsters, guys report 8400 with a 20x8 and around 8000 with a 20x10,.. my MVVS 35 turns a 3W 20x8 at 7200 tuned for flight and top speed is pretty good in my plane, and my Twin is lighter than my MVVS is with Mount/Muff/Batt/Igni,, my plane would really zing with the Twin, ,my plane weighs 15 &1/2 with my MVVS,,
av8tor1977 .. I didn't see what fuel line you said you were using,, that's a question in sort LOL

“How much more does the Tartan single weigh over a good OS1.20?â€
The Super Tartan single as shipped w/ muffler, and prop adapter,
comes out to 44oz.(2.75lb.) on a cheapy kitchen spring scale.
You'll have to check on the OS weight.

RE: GAS/GLOW HOW TO....
Despite all the great information here for doing the conversion I think one thing has been overlooked and that is what stopper should be used on the fuel tank. I have used Sullivan, Du-Bro and Kavan tanks with the gas/glow mix but the only stopper that didn't desolve was white in color. The black and or brown (gas) stoppers did not last. So, I am hoping some of you guy's can add to this and also what fuel fillers are you using? Dubro makes nice "Kwik-Fill" ones for Glow or Gas but can either be used for the gas/glow mix?

RE: GAS/GLOW HOW TO....
I have had no problems with the "For gasoline" stoppers, but I don't leave fuel in the tank after flying.
I lost my only regular gasoline/ignition powered model, a beautiful Christen Eagle biplane to the fact that a supposedly "For Gasoline" stopper dissolved and the bits made the engine quit at a most inappropriate time... []
I had tested the stopper by soaking in gas overnight and it was fine. But I forgot to de-fuel the plane after flying one time, and when I flew it a week later is when the problem occurred and it died an early death. Post mortem revealed a disintegrating fuel stopper that caused carb blockage and the engine to quit right as I was adding power to make it over a concrete wall on final approach. What a horrible "smack!" that made. I just wanted to sit down and cry...

RE: GAS/GLOW HOW TO....
Well sullivan products came out with a stopper that works on both Glow and gasoline fuel so it should work very well for our application

Yep. That is what I use on the airplanes. On my flight box, I just have some cheap plastic (vinyl?) tubing from the hardware store. It has gotten a little bit stiff, but has held up without problems for about 2 1/2 years using Gas/Glow fuel.
Here is a good source for tubing at a great price: http://www.rotaxparts.net/scripts/pr...?idCategory=55
Either the "Tygothane" or the blue urethane primer line works very well. The primer line is not pliable enough to use inside the fuel tank for a clunk tube however.

Last time my wife was at Hospital for a test...they gave us a bunch of clear tubing in 2 sizes. I think I will try some and see what happens. Capt,n
