The dowel is just fine...just drill a small hole through the center....on lathe or anyway you can. It is good to have the dowel kinda rounded at end wher it contacts piston. Capt,n

Ok I know you are talking about timing a engine here but because the topic says XYZ ignition I need to ask a question. I have a friend that has a 25 cc XYZ engine and ign. and as had a lot of problems with the ign.He is on his thrid one. That might just be a simple problem that can be fixed easily .The problem is with the ign on if he puts the spark plug (with the plug lead on it) next to the engine and grounds (spark plug to engine)it ,the thing starts firing and won't stop until he removes it form the ground? So what is going on?
Can you guys help me get him going?
Thanks clocknut

I have had that same phenomenon. it starts sparking on its own and wont stop till you shut it off and turn it back on. mine dosent matter if its on or off the ground but sometimes starts this when you try and start it. it will not correct itself till you turn it off and back on again. kind of like its set itself in a feed loop.
I always thought this was a result of improper ground. I never put the power to the ignition unless the base of the plug is grounded to the crankcase and if the ignition module has a ground wire that it too is fastened to the crankcase.

Otherwise the spark tries to feed back through the sensor and causes all kinds of goings on and eventually takes the hall effect sensor or the module itself out.

I went back and reset the timing using the method you guys described. I had it set around 15 degrees BTC when I started. When I set it at 28 degrees BTC, it was right where I had started. And at WOT it randomly missfire. I moved it back to about 20 degrees and it smoothed out and ran normally. Any explanations?

Jim
Is it missing or detonating? My Ryobi starts detonating at 22 degrees at WOT and could be mistaken for missing.

I have been converting and selling gas engines for close to eight years and the method I posted is about as accurate as you can get, If dead center of the lose play with the piston on top of compression stroke is not top dead center then what is it.

TDC is when the piston stops moving up, or the moment the dial gauge stops moving. During the rotation where the dial gauge does not move the crank has passed tdc and big/little end play is being taken up.

The above can be demonstated with a simple cardboard cutout.

Engines with lots of big/little end play will have a larger degree of rotation where the guage does not move.
