Default HOMELITE TIMBERMAN 45CC HELP

Hi guys, I was wondering if anyone out there knows where I can locate a cylinder and piston (either, or, both) for a Homelite 45cc Timberman chainsaw engine? I am working a conversion and have found that the piston and cylinder are badly scuffed. I am on a tight budget but will pay a reasonable price... if not I will just toss the whole gig. Can anyone help?

Well, I need the old bolt-on carb type... you know, the "good" one! Heh heh. All of them I have found so far seem to have messed up cylinders. So sad.

I have one of Each type saw but I use them as saws and not model airplane engines. I've never had any trouble with them.

I have the same problem with an Echo 58cc. The engine is all converted, and runs well with good power because I went ahead and put a new Bowman ring in it. But the piston is so loose in the cylinder that you can hear it slap when you turn the engine over! I am afraid to fly the darn thing, as I am sure sooner or later the piston is going to break. Over 200 bucks for a replacement piston and cylinder, so, it just sits on the shelf, hoping for the day when I stumble across another PB-600 Echo blower on the cheap.

Way back when, they used to save a loose piston by knurling the skirt. It was pretty much the knurling that we all know. The knurling displaces some of the material effectively increasing the pistons diameter. I have no idea if this trick is still used or who would do it, but it might be a way to fix your engine without a new piston and cylinder. Good luck

Hi,

Thanks for the tip, but yeah, I'm an old hot rod mechanic and we used to use piston knurling sometimes. (Valve guides too sometimes...) When we set up an engine with loose clearances for racing and street use, sometimes we later had to knurl the pistons to keep using the engine without boring and/or replacing pistons. It really never lasted very long though...

Unfortunately with this engine, someone either ran without an air filter, or got way excited with starting fluid, because from the intake port down the cylinder is severely worn, and the piston has pretty well had it too.

you can buy a new homelite 45cc shortblock at Jacks small engine repair for 75.00 part #up08656a. This is the new model with rubber boot carb mount. A machined aluminum mount for the carb can be bought from brillelli customs for 30.00 bucks. I have one of these
with a bowman ring and a wt-201 carb. Spins a zoar 21x8 at around 7000rpm, a very smooth running engine. It pulls a 15lb plane very good. I had an old model 45cc with a larger HDA? carb and it didn`t run near as good as with the wt-201.
