RE: Stihl 65cc 4-mix on 30% Edge

If you are curious about the different induction methods for these four stroke utility engines do a patent search. McCulloch, had a read valve crankcase inducted four stroke patented in 1994. The YS patent relates mostly to their fuel management system, which is why OS was able to borrow the supercharging method but had to use their own electronic fuel metering method. Webra was probably the first one with their crankcase supercharged four strokes back in the early 80's. It worked just like the animatino link in MSS999's post shows it.

Shindaiwa's C4 shows 1.4HP for the 2.1ci engine so I think the induction method is mainly to lubricate the engine rather than supercharging. Honda's GX35 at 2.2 ci makes 1.3HP, so there is very little gain in power.

Where might one find a prop hub for one of these Stihl 65s?I e-mailed lamberts RC but they said they didn't have any.
Thanks

Thanks Ralph,
That one wasn't for the 65 but he said he could make one.

Here is another question.
On the cam there is a compression relief lever.Would it be a good idea to disable it?It would be difficult to impossible to remove it without destroying the cam/cam gear piece, but I might be able to disable it.

Thanks guys,
One more question if I may. Does anyone know what the thread size is for the shaft on the fan (propeller, in this case)side is?

TIA,

Hopefully I'll have one of mine running on the test stand in a week or two.I just got my EI unit in the mail so I still have to hook that up.

just jumped in to see if anyone had any updates on the stihl 65cc 4stroke. tach reading w/prop size? how about vertical performance on that 30% edge? and by the by... what's the weight of the engine once you got it 'trimmed'?

RE: Stihl 65cc 4-mix on 30% Edge

Still haven't run mine yet.As for weight.I weighed one with it's mount, prop hub and carb mount w/carb on but without the EI unit and exhaust tube(haven't made one yet) and it comes in at 5lbs 4oz.Hopefully I'll get one running by the end of the month.

RE: Stihl 65cc 4-mix on 30% Edge

I picked one of these up, actually got it today.

It's already converted. Prop Hub and C&H ignition.
I was told when I bought it that the 65s have an issue transitioning from and idle.
I talked to Ralph at rcignitions and he said he made a new base gasket for the Carb with a smaller hole in it.
He mentioned another Carb. But had not personally tried it.

So is there a "Good" fix for this problem?

Thanks everyone.

RE: Stihl 65cc 4-mix on 30% Edge

Fired up my stihl 65 on thursday for the first time. Runs great with good throttle response. No numbers as my tach battery was dead, but seems to turn a 23x8 xoar with authority. Hope to maiden the 1/3 super cub tommorow. I had to start it with an electric starter the first time as the new engine had very little compression. After a few minutes of running the rings seated enough to allow easy hand starting.

So any news on how she runs?

I have a Stihl 65. It has trouble with transistion from idle with out use of the choke.

Any ideas?

Can anyone tell me what I should be looking for to find one of these engines, what weed wacker model? Thanks.

Ralph
What carb are you using? I would first try richening the low end. Mine transitions beutifully. It flies mine cub very nicely.

JohnF,
You need to look for a Stihl BR550 or BR600 backpack blower.

RE: Stihl 65cc 4-mix on 30% Edge

It's the stock Carb.

It says "60" on the choke.

I tried taking some pictures, but I can't get them off my camera.

I have tryed adjusting the needles.

The only way it will transistion is if I use the choke.

Ralph at rcignitions.com said he had trouble with one and made a new base
gasket with a smaller hole and that let his transistion.

That maybe a quick fix but I'd like a good fix.

RE: Stihl 65cc 4-mix on 30% Edge

Ralph, Maybe the timing needs to be adjusted instead of the carb.? I did find out that my B&S, 40cc, 4-stroke liked a smaller venturi which means it likes less air which means it runs richer. Thanks J, I found that out when I took the time to read this entire thread. [sm=confused_smile.gif]

RE: Stihl 65cc 4-mix on 30% Edge

Since I bought a short block I did not have a stock carb. I used a wt-201 off one of my 50cc 2strokes. Since the blower application does not need throttle response maybe the carb does not have the needed midrange circuit. I would try another carb. Mine has such good low speed response that I had to put a severe throttle curve in the radio to tame it.

JohnF 07-31-2008 11:23 AM

RE: Stihl 65cc 4-mix on 30% Edge

Mark, What do you mean by "throttle curve" and how do you program that into the radio and what radio are you using? Thanks.

jtisch 07-31-2008 03:05 PM

RE: Stihl 65cc 4-mix on 30% Edge

Well,I should finally be ready to fire up my Stihl tomorrow. This one I have equipped with an EI unit and a 15MM Walbro WYK carb (rotary barrel).Hope it works!

BTW, what are you guys doing for a muffler/exhaust? I'll go ahead without one for now but I am interested in what you have done. The stock one is a monstrosity.

J

PS: JohnF, I have throttle curve adjustment on my heli radios. It allows you to adjust the servo travel through the whole range, almost like a double exponential (above half throttle and below).Hope that makes sense. I haven't even checked to see if any of my AC transmitters have it.
