RE: Esky Lama V3
Hi Fellow RC'rs,
I got my son Lama 3 for Easter and we are having issues with it. I am not sure what he did but he crashed it into a concreate floor and broke a blade. I replaced the blade for him but now the motors make a somewhat sqweeling noise when trying to hover. It also wont keep a heading and wants to turn to the right even with full left rudder input.
Also, the light on the 4way controller turns red when the throttle stick is above center stick.
Any suggestions? We have about 6 battery packs into it.

So yeah....what's the "gold standard" for motor upgrades for a v3? The Xtremes? Is there a brushless motor out there?

I can tell you that there ARE brushless motor upgrades - but I can't tell you more than to point you in the direction of Tony (president of helitek-rc.com) as he is very interested and has done this before - whereas I stick with brushed motors!
The "gold standard" for BRUSHED is probably Xtremes, but I think (and have installed) 4 x sets of Supreme Bearing Motors. A Lama4 flyer asked re. how to increase flight power a while ago - here's a link...[link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=8675944]three options for BRUSHED 180 motors[/link]. Each has a link to a good place to buy & approx price! The bearing motors have ball bearings (not bushes) surrounding the motor's shaft making it run smoother - translating into longer flight times also!
The AFC Systems link within that post takes you to helitek-rc where you can contact Tony via a helpdesk ticket after registering.

Is it possible to make a short video of it TRYING to fly so we can see (and HEAR) what is going on? It might be the bottom gear (gear A) has a few teeth missing (<$6 to replace) OR it could be a bent outer shaft (that has the other gear already attached <$10 to replace).
At a push, the Esky motors may need replacing (approx. $17 a SET OF TWO).
Try ebay searching for "lama gear" and "lama motor"......
It sounds like you have damaged Lipo battery also, so 1. be extra vigilent when charging it, and 2. check its voltage (post its reading), and 3. maybe replace it also (on ebay search for "lama lipo")
Peter[sm=shades_smile.gif]
P.S. These are a common replacement - you only need one 'gear A', and one 'shaft with gear B' - but you can buy them in 2s.
P.P.S. If you want a USA place to buy these parts instead try [link=http://www.boomtownhobbies.com/Esky_Gear_and_Shaft_Set_B_Lama_V3_p/ek1-0316.htm]BoomTownHobbies.com[/link]. The gear parts that you need cost $8 each and the motors also $8 each (remember to buy TWO Esky)

RE: Esky Lama V3
Good stuff! Thanks for the info. I'd likely stick with the Xtremes mostly because they seem readily available......
I took it outside again yesterday. Boy it's sensitive to the wind! Bottom line: I broke a blade. (stupid tree........)

RE: Esky Lama V3
Hey again Mike,
I'm a firm believer that things do best the things that they were designed for - in other words - these helicopters are designed for indoor flights!
Now, I know that plenty of people will disagree and complain knowing that, but the Lama2, Lama3 and Lama4 are all marketed as INDOOR HELICOPTERS. The Big Lama is Esky's attempt at an OUTDOOR coaxial (and the jury is still out on that one....)
I own and am trying to fly a Big Lama with a FlyCamOne2 between the skids ATM (well, I was semi-successfully this afternoon anyway)
Peter[sm=shades_smile.gif]
P.S. That is not to say that you can't try to fly it on windless days.........

Oh I know I'm not supposed to.....but it was a nice (somewhat) calm day....and my kids wanted to see it fly. So I obliged.
I'm glad I managed to keep it away from the pool. Some of us don't have floats installed....

RE: Esky Lama V3
i love flying outside!
though there are only 2 or 3 days a year that its calm enough for the v3
i live in an old french house with very low ceilings and small doorways
so my lama seems huge inside
and i have a 2 year old daughter that loves to watch 'cochies' (helicopters), she tries to catch them sometimes, very alarming.
its flying very well now thanks to peters advice
it will (almost) hover on the spot, still a few inches drift, but it stays more or less in the same place

RE: Esky Lama V3
Hello All,
Looking for some help please? I have a V3 Lama that I received about 2 months ago. Was hovering it for a while when a neighbor stopped by. Landed it, and it hasn't flown since. The red LED on transmitter just flashes. I have tried to un-bind and bind, but that does not work. I had ordered another Lama for my neighbor as a gift. It arrived and my Lama will bind to his and it flies just fine. That's obviously a transmitter problem.
I guess my question is I wonder how it could be working one second and not the next? Anyone had a problem like that? I don't just want to order another transmitter and have the same thing happen. I tried to get a help from xheli; they told me that there was only a 30 day warranty so I'm out of luck there. Is there another transmitter that will bind with the Lama's 4 in 1 receiver? Thanks for any help. A. Rio

they look good but are they too heavy at 40g for a decent flight length?
im well tempted

This is a new one to me - I have never heard of this happening before - usually the Tx wear out before they "stop dead"! You might just have to buy another Tx. Sorry mate.
I am using an FM Esky Tx that I got for the Big Lama with my Lamas and Dauphins - just change the crystals on the front panel before I fly, and have not had any troubles in the 2 years that I have had them.
All I can tell you (re. 2.4G Tx only) is that the red LED on Tx flashing means that the Tx is trying to find the receiver so it can bind (but I suppose you already guessed that)
Sorry I can't "help" more[]
Peter
P.S. Now.....if it was a FM Tx, I would say that the crystals have moved from their cradle or stuffed (and cheap to replace).

The main question is the power to weight ratio. A one cell (3.7V) Lipo lifting a 40g heli IS POSSIBLE - these helis can LIFT quite a bit, but I have doubts as to whether it can hover stably or can move around well and, as you said, its flight length. If you do buy one - let us know how it flies etc!

Pgroom 68,
Yeah thanks......Pretty weird. Should have said this is a 2.4 Ghz. And you are right; it's like the Tx is looking but never finds or locks on to anything. As I said, my buddy's new Tx locked on just fine. I guess I could understand this if I had dropped the Tx or something like that, but just shutting it off once and it hasn't worked since is ridiculous! I'm still hoping someone will tell me that a different Tx like a Futaba etc will work with the 4 in 1 receiver? Anyway thanks again. ARio

Are you in a position to borrow a Futaba, Eclipse 7, Optic 6 etc - even for a few minutes at a heli-meet or LHS - and try it out? Just a thought. Although it might turn out to be more expensive than buying another Esky 2.4G Tx [link=http://www.miracle-mart.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=2327]Miracle-mart[/link] is out-of-stock at the moment anyway - you could always add your email to their automatic "stock alert"!

Hey Pgroom,
That's a good idea. It's not that it's cheaper now for me, it's rather a matter of principle. I may buy other Esky choppers, but I'm not giving them any more money for a radio that I already paid for! As I said, if I had dropped it, or damaged it somehow, well it would be on me, but turning it off and setting it down, should not break it eh? I will give the LHS a call and see if I can make my bird fly with it. If so, maybe I'll just give them some money. Thanks for the idea. A. Rio

Please call me Peter. I agree with you re. a matter of principle - but with Esky being a HUGE company - will they see it the same way? Do they value one customer enough to be sympathetic - and not just think it is another excuse? If you ask me, you would have had a better chance of a good outcome if you had originally bought the heli from Michael @ USHobbySupply.com instead of X-heli.com.
When I had a problem that I thought was a DOA or product fault - Michael offered to go "halves" on a replacement! Not much consolation for you now, I know - but for next time................I understand and share your grief![&o]
Peter
P.S. Esky is not so bad - another idea - TRY emailing Esky direct. Explain your situation and wait - you just might get a surprise! [email protected]

RE: Esky Lama V3
Hey chuckmfnnorris,
Did you make it here OK? If I read correctly, you have a Esky Lama V3 - well, so do all these people!
You have a problem that needs the outer shaft replaced - well, I don't know of any "handbook" of instructions - but I would be happy to run briefly through the steps. I need to know a couple of things first. WHY are you replacing the outer shaft? or is it the upper gear teeth?....and how much detail do I have to type?
I really don't want to have to type copious instructions (eg. "hold heli at arms length, turn on Tx then plug in helicopters battery, tilt so you can see lower blade spinning from the end and carefully raise throttle on Tx to halfway..." if I can say "spin it up to half throttle...")
If you have made it here OK, and can figure out how to post an answer to these questions - I will gladly post you a list of steps.

Did you make it here OK? If I read correctly, you have a Esky Lama V3 - well, so do all these people!

RE: Esky Lama V3
i need to replace the upper teeth wheel. i also need to know how to take it apart so i can install the metal swashplate i ordered. as for how specific the instructions need to be, no too much detail. i can get the lower gear off the bottom and pull out the shaft its attached to out.

My advice is to wait until your metal set (or is it just the swashplate?) arrives - and do both processes at the same time - I can talk you through them OK as I have already installed at least 25 of those metal swashplate SETS for my mates on their V4s.
The lower gear comes apart from central shaft (shaft A), but the upper gear and shaft B are one unit (may or may not have a bearing at its base) - and are sold as one unit - it is a more involved process to get it out, especially the "outer shaft collar" (which has a grub screw in it). You can see this collar easily - it is the one below swashplate - just just slightly above the main frame! The difficulty is in untightening the grub screw - as it seems to be thread-locked into place at the factory. A little heat from a soldering iron tip (directly on the screw head) will coax it out easier - but even if you don't own one - I think you can do it without. Just be patient and rotate the grub screw CCW a little at a time WITH A SCREWDRIVER THAT FITS WELL....
What do you think? Shall I wait or go ahead now?
Peter
P.S. The below pic shows the metal collar - in this pic it has rotated so the black screw is pointing aft.

i ordered the full metal head set, i will wait for it to be delivered before taking the heli apart. the PIA screw is what holds the shaft and gear in place?
