Morning Biker_Dude:
This is the solder I use. http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...ductId=2062712
It is lead based NOT lead free. It is lower temp to melt, and is not as brittle as the new Lead Free stuff.
You should not need a Silver based solder for any of the applications on the heli. If a connection is getting hot enough to melt solder there is something very wrong.
I use this soldering iron. http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...odsInSession=1 It is 40 watt, and will do a quick heat up on the piece I am soldering. It will also handle the Bullet connectors on the ESC and motor with ease. You might also want a small jar of flux, http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...ctId=2049774 as this keeps the location clean while soldering, this is especially helpful on items like bullet connectors. You also use it as a tip cleaner.

Wow Sir Disney
You are so right on all counts. Most time the soldering is difficult the tip needs cleaning. The solder iron I use is even of lees watts than yours and works well. Some times as a tip cleaner I use http://www.gordonbrush.com/.006-bras...1006-l-en.html

And http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...ductId=3086618 is my soldering iron, though I've got http://www.cooperhandtools.com/brand...c=037103475848 ths in the wing. I had this one first.

Hey Guys,
I ordered a replacement tail servo last week and installed it today. It'sa Futaba S9257 . My tail assembly was showing some wear and the stock ESky servo was starting to get allot of wag and bounce. I guess it just couldn't keep up with the added demands of the worn tail assembly anymore. Anyway, I installed the new servo today. Although it's at least double the size of stock, I was able to use standard mounts with washers added. What a friggin' difference! Between the GY 520 gyro and that servo my bird is now rock solid. It does exactly what I tell it to. Nothing more and nothing less. I should have bought it months ago. I can't wait till I get my new tail assembly installed!

Just thought I'd share.

Joaquin

Nice Tinkman
That is the servo I use. The best always makes a difference. It also takes time for a person to come around also influenced by cash. After the intial cost of getting into the hobby, a little cash becomes available to get the right stuff because you don't have the tools and crashing expenses that you have in the beginning.

Hi Guys,

I just recieved the ESC that Disney Recomended. I was wondering if I have to cut the plastic from it the way I did the stock Esky ESC?

I didn't on mine, I just mounted it like it was. He may have recommended you remove the heatshrinkon the stock ESC because of the over-heating problem they tend to have.

The plastic on the Dynam ESC is fine to leave in place.
It dose not have the heat and Fire problems that the stock Esky ESC has.

A good ESC can really help, it can also give you longer flight times, because it will be more efficent.

My ESC seems to be getting pretty hot, is that just the heat sink doing it's job?

You will get heat off the ESC flat plate that is normal.
I have known fliers who attach a small finned heat sink to the metal plate on the sink to disapate the heat.
It should not be needed on a decent ESC.
It would be more for self assurance than anything else, but I will say that cooler means it will last longer.
I would use a piece of a heat sink off the North Bridge chip on a PC motherboard. Or something similar.

Cool, Thanks Dis...For now I just cut the plastic from around the flat plate.

That will allow it to Breathe better that is for sure.
The plastic as you are aware acts as an insulation.

Yeah I just trimmed away from the metal plate. I have a question, If I can't move my battery far enough forward to balance the heli how do I go from there?

I made a wood plate from Bass wood that I got at the local hobby shop, and put a back stop on it to give me perfect balance every time I change the battery. As you can see it is longer than the frame.
It is screwed in from the bottom of the frame and the screws are ground off with a Dremel so that they will not damage the battery.
Istill Had to add some Lead fishing weights to teh front of the canopy inside. I used double sided tape to hold in the lead, flattend it with a hammer first to get a gripping surface.
Hope the images help.
The last image is Me flying a Control Line Plane in 1973, I have been at this just a little while.
Wow things have really changed, I even got a hair cut., and "Look Ma no Strings!"

Holy Crap Disney, that last picture just sent me into a flash-back! When I was in elementary school my dad and I used to fly U-Controls out in an open field. Just thinking about it brings back the smell of Cox fuel...

Hey Dis, I was wondering what motor and pinion you were running on your heli? Also with the stock  radio what will give me the best head speed?
I am running a metal head.
Thanks,
BD

Hey Bro Biker
Just for differential stock motor 3800KV and 10T pinion gear. What pinion do you have on there now. My night heli is flying close to yours depending on the esc you are using.

I am running the stock motor and Pinion.
I am not a whiz at motor and pinion combos, as for head speed, the only way to change that is with the pitch curve and throttle curve. Those cannot be modified on a stock radio.
You will need a Spektrum DX6i or some other programmable radio to change the pitch curve and the throttle curve.
You need a higher head speed when you have a flatter pitch curve. IE: less pitch mor RPMto gain lift.
There is a happy point that you are looking for in teh RPMand motor torque to gain optimum flight characteristics.
Not too much hear RPMand not too much pitch.
Hope this helps and dose not cause confusion.

It's a 10 tooth pinion and stock motor thats probably more than 2 years old. I went to the heli field on Sunday and there was a guy there with a 450 size heli and it seemed like he was running at a much higher head speed than me, but he also was using a DX 6 radio or something there about. I'm sure that my stock radio can't perform any where near what a DX 6 can, but that will have to wait.
BTW where should my hov pit and trim pit knobs be set? I read some where that hov should be around 12 and my trim around 2. Does that sound correct to you?

Thanks Ron, Yeah that helps. I kind of thought it had more to do with the radio than anything else. Do you think I should replace my motor, or just wait until I know for sure that it is weak? Right now I'm still just doing easy circles and such in my back yard.

I replaced my motor with a HDX450 3550KV motor. They used to sell tham at Heli Direct but I don't see them there anymore. A new motor will make a HUGE difference. Much more punch and longer flight time than the stock ESky motor.
