Wheelnut, now this is blast from the past. Only thing I now use my BOL for is to clear the dust in the stairwell at home where my duster can not reach.

I kept the Ultimate BOL and donated the other one to my son who lives in Namibia. That is the BOL that did the international crossborder flight between Namibia and Angola accross the Okovango River. I do know that the majority of the guys who frequented this thread moved on to HK450;s and bigger with most now flying quads in various configurations and brands. I am looking for a Alum Swash Plate Guide for the BOL. I have looked everywhere and I can't find one, not even the purple one. Any ideas?

Well i read all 268 pages of this thread...Peter never did get a BOL without a transmitter. Spiros now has over 1000 BOL's and everyone else 'moved up' to 450's. The End.

Anybody seen or tried these xtreme BOL products? I have not seen these before. Those blades look like carbon fibre. Adjustable flybar! This place even has new rtf BOL's for sale! http://www.rcparty.com/en/144-helico...axials#/page-2

Recently I flew some, all stock brushed motors with the batteries I had (some go still strong).
I have a great time flying them. I enjoy much.

In fact I don`t know how many I have. They must be a dozen, somewhere here I must have written but cannot remember.
I even bought some (more) spare parts, as I can`t remember what I have.
I started messing with an unfinished brushless conversion on an Xtreme body kit and saw that with another transmitter/receiver/esc I don`t have to have a switch so gyro gets initialized. It works straight away. So it`s either one of those three changes.
This brushless was the one I flew but had started to convert it to xtreme body kit.
So I bought some extra DD coaxial mixers, some motors, gyro, esc, etc.
I hope I can finish building even one brushless, as now I have two kids.
I wish I could build those brushless and the E-500 white and yellow fuselage.
I think I will never get into the 450s as I have forgot how to set them up, I was not good at flying anyway (I could only hover them) and I am afraid of them (that I will get injury).
That bad thing is I have tons of them.
Anyway, I came by to say Hi.

Great to hear from you Spiros, Hope we could stay in touch. I quit the hobby shortly after the big lama came out, and when i came back recently everyone moved on. I had many parts left over so i decided to stick with the big lama. I now have 6 and hundreds of spare parts. If you ever need a part i will give it to you. Sorry but i decided not to go brushless. I found the Xtreme 380 ball bearing motor has plenty of power. Unfortunately it looks like they are all sold out. I am in Canada I was wondering if you have any or know someone who does? I also made a very light parachute drop on one of my big lamas. I have a piece of braided wire attached to a spring loaded pin with the other end on the left servo. I then adjust the length of the wire until the pin lets go of the elastic and parachute when the transmitter stick is fully forward. Keep in touch Spiros! Here is some pics. Kevin

Nice to see you have fun with the Big Lama. It`s a beautiful rc helicopter. I like the fuselage.
I saw your videos and I have some comments.
Your onboard video is quite very steady, I liked it.
The bomb release is a plus, I like your idea and creativity.
Nice leds there too.
In the 2 MINUTE RC HELICOPTER BUILD I see you added even a tail motor! Also that you use some green silicone tube and I think it`s a tube in a tube config. I am waiting some ID 2mm - OD 5mm silicone tube but I think it should be more like 1.8mm.
I see a red fuselage with the new tail design, with no bottom fin.
I noticed that you don`t use an extended shaft and no taped fuselage. That`s good as if you don`t get blade strikes then it flies better with the stock shaft and no tape means no extra weight or bad center of gravity.
I tape all my fuselage so they don`t break no matter what.
Unfortunately I don`t know anything about Xtreme motors. But as you like the more power then going brushless may be the answer.

The most hard to find is the EK5-0004 motors. Some USA shops list them but have no stock. So I bought some from Ali and see what I will get, as they may be EK5-0005 actually. If they are EK5-0005 then I`ll try the 9T pinion..
Then it seems that 250 size heli motors could be an alternative but then again only a few available.
EK1-0352 10T pinion is sold out but you can find similar press-on pinions at different modulus. I don`t remember the modulus but it must be 0.5

Thanks Spiros! I owe a lot to you of over the last 7 months to all the information you shared here over the years. I even made a folder called 'BOL tips' from you're excellent posts. You were one of the few people that provided accurate weights which was extremely helpful to me keeping my builds within the guidelines you provided.Big Lama cabins are around 30 usd each So i ordered 12 off a guy on ebay for 17usd. Zonda Hobbies (esky) changed the tail section by raising the rotor and removing the lower fin. I now solve this by re- adding a lower fin made from balsa and painting to match. I never liked the look of the tail rotor blowing in the wind either, so I remove it or add a motor for a more realistic appearance. I have never had a blade strike with the stock shaft so I feel no need to add an extended one. Unfortunately I cannot help you with brushless parts. A lot of times after customizing the big lama I wonder if the stock one flew better. I guess that's half the fun, but I keep a 100% stock one to compare now. Sven, yes I remember! Good he is still around. What I don`t remember is my RCgroups registration account.
I noticed it in your video, it was drifting. But if the build is OK, bearings, gears/etc make contact with the inner ring only then it is the 3in1.
Try adjusting the "proportional" pot while battery is unplugged. Give some more gyro gain too (you have it all way up so that`s not good news, it should tail wag).
Then try adjusting more the pots, sometimes they have dirt and turning them again may help.
Some 3in1 drift, some are rock stable. If it is something wrong with it then it will never stop drifting.
I lube the motors too, this helps making them run smooth. Watch for a loose motor connection to the 3in1 too.
I may be mistaken but I think blades may make drifting too. Not so sure if I remember right. You never know if you try another pair.
I ordered one cabin from ebay, I asked for a green one as I can`t remember if I have one or two. I hope it arrives green.
Taped cabin cannot break but makes the heli around 30grams heavier, if I remember right, and makes balancing more tricky.
A stock cabin and stock inner shaft is the perfect combo for indoor use. It flies way better this way.
I have one for indoor use and can take off and land at very tight spaces, less than 1 sq. meter.
As you have no blade strikes then stock inner shaft is the best. More stable, more accuracy, less vibrations.
Some of my fleet is eating dust here:

So far I pulled it apart and inspected the wiggly bits. ( it still goes.)
I like it!
To date I have made a training skid hoop about 600mm diameter to prevent roll overs and have been hovering around the lounge floor getting the hang of the controls.
(also spending time getting up stick hours on R/C desk pilot and Heli-x. both are great.)
Will be looking for spares and shiny bits in the future.
So, I thought I would drop in to keep this thread alive and say hello AND to say the BIG LAMA is STILL A LIVE!
Looking at a second one right now but the price just went up. : (
( I'm on a budget and crashing is not an option right now )
Any leads to parts would be awesome! ( I expect to pay a kings ransom in postage ...)
will post pics soon. ( please don't laugh at my training wheels! or "mods"...)

Hi all, I'm new to RC helicopters and I got a second-hand Big Lama.
Is it normal that the elevator stick only moves the left "leg" of the "plate" (I don't know the proper names), while the aileron stick only moves the right "leg".
