A bit of advice for your progress in the heli world. Do not teach yourself the bad habit of killing the throttle to avoid a crash. It takes many hours and crashes to correct this bad habit when youupgrade to non coaxial helis.

Hi Edmund,

That`s a good advice. I keep throttling down rapidly on my 450s and so I get tail boom strikes (and make lots of damage).
Till now all the crashes I have are this way. When I get some progress then I`ll crash out of bad thumbs. (Yeah, I know, I will crash a lot till I get flying safely)
It`s difficult though not to throttle down.

Now I must get used to it.

Thanks, I will keep that in mind when im flying/crashing (flashing? ). To best of my recollection, i think i usually wait until the crash is inevitable before dropping the throttle... i dont like to give up, lol. If im about to run into something i will try to bring the nose round in safe direction, pitch down and throttle up a bit. It even works sometimes

Since we're on the subject of next steps, is it advantageous to fly a fixed pitch before going to a cp? Not that i'll be doing either anytime soon, just wondering.

In another forum there are a difference of opinion on FP vs CP. With the majority indicating that FP was a waste in thier progression. I bought CP's and even a TREX 550 and just did not have the guts to fly it as I cut throttle on my first CP flight and flew it into the gound.A few times therafter as well. Bought a Blade mCPX a few months ago andit taught me the things I need to know about CP at no extra cost as it just does not break if you fly over grass and though still learning I had the conficende to fly my 550 last weekend.

So we have an update, the BOL has landed in the hell hole where I currently am. It started off bad when the charger I got with it was bad, but a friend has one here I'm using. Xheli is gonna be sending me a replacement one. Anways I made up a poor mans trainer and off I went. I was shocked how easy it was to get going an control for that matter. I got 5-6 flights in then the battery velcrow showed it true colors. The batt slipped out and a nice nose dive later, blades are junk. I did find out though a rubberband works wonders to hold the battery in place. Speaking of spares I got the xtreme battery too. Well that things doesn't fit in the battery slot. Any ideas? Also what flybar can I get as a replcement I see xtreme has the one with lights will that work?

I managed to get the extreme battery to work well enough for now. I can't seem to find the stock flybar for it from a US company or any company for that matter.

Try www.thinkrc.com for the stabilizer bar. I just got 2 of them from there. They are in Cali.

Got my xtreme shafts and gears installed today... now if i only had time to fly!

Check the picture of my credit card mod that keeps the lipo in place even if the velcro comes off. Spiros made a whole new cradle but mine cost nothing and is very effective on both my BOL's even the one with the big ESC. The white piece is bent 90 degrees towards the inside and is slipped between the card and skid as you can see

3mm rod stock: The good thing about flying over lawn is that crashes are not too damaging. The bad news is that if anything falls off, its impossible to find. I lost one of the tail boom supports from the Xtreme tail boom kit. I could buy a spare supports kit (about $4) or if i can find a source for 3mm black palstic rod stock, I could perhaps make a repalcement. Anyone know of a source?

Hey, guys!

Wow, it's been a while since I've touched base with my friends here. I hope you are all doing well.

Since I've moved up to flying quads and larger helicopters... I wanted a heli that was predictably easy to fly around on my land. The Big Lama was perfect for that.. but had some strange urge to stick with a single blade helicopter.
I found one on ebay ... not too expensive, but it's made by Art Tech and I've had bad experiences with them before. But, for some reason I pulled the trigger on it and it's a pretty cool little helicopter. I've had others like this, but they were very unstable. I noticed that this one, like the little CB-100 I have, has the flybar under the rotors, and mounted at a 45 degree angle to the blades. That's what makes the CB-100 so stable as a single blade heli.
It flies on 2s... so I took it out and ran it up. Before I knew what happened I was 2ft off the ground in a solid hover. So, I moved it around some.... then took off and started flying it like my Big Lama. This Art Tech heli is just a bit bigger than the Big Lama... but I swear to you, if you can fly the Big Lama... you can easily fly this single blade heli. IMHO, they fly exactly like the Big Lama. But, one motor, one drive gear, an active tail rotor driven by tourque tube... and you're flying exactly as well as you were on your BOL. I urge you guys to find one and try it. Think about it.... Half the blades to break!

If it is 3mm then:
You can buy a 450 tail boom brace, such as this.
Or a 450 training gear kit, such as this.
Or just a rod, such as this. See at your LHS.

those are good ideas. I have a traninggear set, but rather than chop it up. I went with this:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...00_i00_details

I found other sources for 3mm rod but they were in China and the shipping was too high because of the required shipping tube. Another training kit would have worked. Thanks.

Hi Buzz,

Good you found one FP you like and find it as much easy to fly as a Big Lama.
Which is the model? A link?

Well, I crash only my 450s now. The Big Lama does not need any repair job. It`s a pity Ihave so many spare parts.
A few posts back there was a question about flybar`s shortage. Well, I have... seventeen spares...
Can`t really tell how many blades. Not dozens, tons...
Well, Ifind the BOL too beautiful with its nice looking fuselage and the scale helicopter appearance that I can`t change it.
Even if Imanage to fly the 450 then the BOL will be still my love.

Have a great time,

Spiros

I think he is talking about this
http://www.art-tech.cn/english/Artic...?ArticleID=355

available here
http://www.parkflyers.com/Falcon_400...RTF_p/2800.htm

Its actually a CP but has a 45 degree self stabilizing flybar. Intertesting.

Hey,

Thanks for the replys, seems none of those sites will ship to APO addresses. And the companys that ship to APO are sold out.

On the order list now are more blades, the flybar and a spare canopy. Seems blades are the only thing I can find, so far.

Sorry to hear you have trouble finding spare parts.
As you have searched the USshops then I`ll post some EU shops that it happens to have seen (but not shopped).
It may be a help.

Fuselage: Apply one layer of good quality (like Tesa brand) clear packaging tape and it will never break.

WOW thank you for the huge list of companys, gonna start looking now!

With the canopy do u apply it on the inside or outside? A friend does RC trucks and he put spray on under coating on the bottom side of the body. What do you think of that idea? Granted I can get tape easy, so thats prolly the best option.

I don`t know about the spray he uses.
If it is something that makes a thick elastic coating then it will help.

I apply one layer from the outside to the whole fuselage and one layer to the inside, but not to the tail that it is impossible to do so.

If you apply it carefully and do not let it have bubbles then it will be nice looking.

You can see the photos.
From top to bottom there is a HBCT taped fuselage, a green BOLtaped fuselage and a blue one taped fuselage.
Then there is my first BOL`s fuselage that I had not taped and broke. Then I taped it but not with so good result.
The other BOL that are in the photo have a stock fuselage (indoors flights or just brand new sitting there).
