Motor and esc problem on my HB King2
I recently picked up a Honey Bee King 2 cheap on Craigslist. It has the 3100rpm brushless motor and EK1-0350 esc. The motor has a hard time getting moving and jitters. At about half throttle it jumps to life and spins up quickly. Once it's spinning it seems to do okay, but from a start it just doesn't want to go. Does anyone have any input as to whether this is a bad motor or a esc problem?

I think the best way -and the only one- to tell what is damaged, the motor or the controller or both, is to practice the trial and error method.
So you can go to your LHS and see if they offer service for this model or pick a controller for start and test by yourself.
A cheap -but good- one is this one: RC Timer ESC 20A Notice that for this motor 20Ais OK and the best solution as it is light weight.
Just make sure you connect the three cables in this way so it spins at the right direction.
You will also need to do some soldering and 2mm bullet connectors and some heat shrink tube.
Or else you could pick a EK1-0350.
Then after connecting the new controller set the throttle range as per instructions and set the other programmable items as well (if there is any).

RE: Motor and esc problem on my HB King2
Thanks aircrash. I hooked the esc to an airplane motor I have and it seemed to do fine, although the throttle curve seems to be really short before it hits full. At least compared to the esc I use for my planes. I don't know if it's different for helis due to the fact that it needs to throttle up quickly before the blades pitch positive for lift. I don't think this esc is programmable anyway. If it is I don't know how. But I'm thinking my problem is the motor. The previous owner of this heli didn't know what he was doing. Gear mesh was all screwed up. Things were binding. Probably burned the motor up.

You`re welcome.
I see you can try by yourself, this is a good thing in this hobby.
The spare parts help also.
So, the esc seems to be OK.
Never mind, as long as you can mess with it then you`ll figure it out.
So you saw you can get a replacement esc cheap enough. The same stands true for a motor too. At least this is positive.
The EK1-0350 has poor documentation -which I can`t even find it in esky site right now- but it has as a programmable settings only the brake, which can be set ON or OFF.
At start up a bi-bi-bi means the brake is OFF and bibi-bibi-bibi means it is ON(it should be OFF for helicopter mode though).
How to set the throttle range is not described at the manual (which is unavailable as Isaid), but you can take a look at some other esc, so to see for the instructions. And you could take a look at Belt CP or even King manual.
Anyway, try the motor then.
But if an esc was needed then Iwould go for a hobbywing or rc timer esc.

RE: Motor and esc problem on my HB King2
I'm not a complete novice with this stuff, I just don't know a whole lot about brushless systems and what's good and what isn't. I ordered a motor off Ebay. I went ahead and got the same one I had. It was cheap. I'll try that. If it still has a problem, then I'll get an esc. Thanks for the suggestions.

This is a known compatibility issue between the 3100 motor and ESC. I had the same problem and simply replaced the ESC with another brand.

RE: Motor and esc problem on my HB King2
I have run the Esky 3100KV (EK5-0004) motor with success with Hobbywing Pentium 30A esc and with RCTimer 10A programmable controller (esc).
Notice the motor is rated for 13A max, but Iuse these motors on a coaxial, so I don`t really stress it that much.
A 20A esc is good for this motor.
Lots of other people run this motor on a coaxial conversion to brushless motors. With some other esc.
Now Esky has this motor and this esc (of the topic) as a set, with the EK5-0080 part number. Also after some google searching I found some others who run this combo with success.
So this makes it compatible (it should be), except if there is a batch with a firmware incompatibility problem.
The bad thing is there are not programmable items for the EK1-0350 esc, so you can`t try some other settings. As soft start-up to Normal and timing to Low or Medium.
Anyway gnd2 made a good point, even if it should be compatible you can`t really know if you don`t try something else.
