Scale Squadron of So-CAL Warbirds and Classics June 20-22, 2014
Warbirds & Classics 2014 8th Annual Scale Fly-In.
June 20 22, 2014
For the past 7 years the Scale Squadron of Southern California's fly-in has been the "don't miss" event in Scale RC in Southern California. Some of the best and most active scale modelers and their beautiful aircraft from all over the Western United States come to out for some great flying, food, and fun! This year's event, Warbird's and Classics, will again have some of the best around. And, don't miss our Saturday Night Banquet and Auction at "The Hangar" featuring Guest Speaker Colonel Bob Thacker, World-Record Holder and AMA Hall-of Fame member along with the beautiful Lady Alice Full Scale P-51D Mustang.
This event is a scale fly-in where like-minded modelers bring out their scale models and fly. No pressure, no stress, just fun in the sun at a beautiful flying site.
Activities:
-Runway Controlled Open Flying. Our flight boss ensures when you have the runway, it's cleared for you. (No 3D flying, no hovering over the runway either)
-Event Awards. Your flying and plane will never be openly judged. But our secret judges watch you fly and give each plane a close up review. On Sunday we award several categories with plaques included best scale flight, best Prop, Best electric Jet, and there's a People's Choice award too. Several categories and awards will be given. You're automatically entered and all you have to do is fly.
- Parade of Planes. Each day during the lunch break, we bring out all of the aircraft out on the runway for People's Choice voting, viewing, and pictures!
-Friday Night Reception. This year, at our hangar at Chino Airport, the Scale Squadron and ZAP Industries are hosting a reception/mixer for pilots and guests only. Free food and suds! The hangar features some beautiful full size aircraft including a P-51, and N3N Bipe, and a SNJ (AT-6).
-Saturday Night Banquet. At the same hangar as the Friday Night Reception, We bring in a tasty catered dinner and enjoy the close of a great day of flying. But it doesn't stop there. There will be some GREAT items auctioned including your chance to ride in Lady Alice, a beautiful P-51D Mustang owned by one of our members, Ken "Wags" Wagner. However, the pinnacle of the evening is our guest speaker. Col Bob Thacker is a world record holder in a full size Twin-Mustang "Betty-Jo" and is an AMA Hall-of-Famer. The Auction is open to all interested modelers attending the event. The price is 20 dollars per person. Register in advance to reserve your seat! We expect to sell out.

I think everyone had a great time despite the high temperatures -(96 in the shade)
Saturday saw the largest crowd of the three-day fly-in and there were many spectators too.
Flying began each day as early as possible for worries of the afternoon winds were on everyone's mind. The summers can be vey hot and windy in the Prado basin and this year was no exception.
Only the fearless, hardcore WARBIRD flyers would throw caution to the wind and mount a 6 plane formation cavalcade of high speed LOW passes and figure eight patterns to "wow-the-crowd"!
I think all who watched were very impressed and entertained. I'm happy to report that there were no mid-air collisions or damaged models during this "demo".
There was a wide variety of both military and civilian scale aircraft to please the masses. Some of the notables were:
Don Rice's big B-29, Brian Young's LA-7, FW-190 and P-47, Brad Osborne's winning Clipped wing Taylor-Craft (with smoke), David Morales' Stunning P-40 built from the Jerry Bates plans,
Greg Thomas' P-47D built from Nick Niroli plans (Greg is part of TEAM VEGAS), Someone had a 1/3 scale Stearman from the Balsa USA kit with a radial engine,
Chris Wolfe brought four models-an EDF Mirage- an A-7 Corsair II - a very tiny F-100 and a Piper Tri-pacer,...Someone flew a very nicely built 1/4 scale P-51D "Old Crow".
There were at least six Corsairs of all sizes, at least five P-47 Thunderbolts, F-86 Sabres, Tiger Moths, a plethora of P-51s, multiple FW-190s and P-40s and a couple Fiesler Storchs,AT-6s,
.....etc,etc.
So here's a few highlights with many more to come!

The Scale Squadron of So CA Can't thank you all enough for coming out and flying at the event this year! PVMAC and Squadron worked hard to have a great field and host a great event to show off all of your awesome warbirds and classics! Big or small, there were a ton of beautiful scale models boring holes in the sky this year!
Thanks for posting those great pics too!

Scale Squadron of SoCal - WARBIRDS & CLASSICS 2014
---Thanks to David Morales for bringing his spectacular P-40B/C model built from the Jerry Bates plans. Not only was David's P-40 displayed in a most
original manner, but he flies it with authority as well. All eyes were on this P-40 during its mission to see if the reputation for ruggedness is well deserved.
All I can say,....mission accomplished!
---Great model David!

---While they come from hundreds of miles around just to show off their love for Scale Aviation and to be part of this great SoCal tradition, going home with
a little something extra is always nice too. Here's only a few of those who received extra recognition for their efforts to entertain, educate and inspire.
