Lubbock's 1st Scale Fly-In a Success!
Despite the rising cost of fuel, hurrican evacuees taking over the T-1 Hangar out at Reese (yet again). Thus causing FEMA, local police/red cross/Reese Technology Center, etc., etc., etc. forcing us to switch to another gate off of Highway 114(Levelland Highway), and thus allowed to HOLD this event after all!
We managed to pull off a great event yesterday. And had a lot of fun doing it.
We had several prizes to give away. And the boys from New Mexico almost cleaned us out! Big Daddy(aka Jim Cowman)'s B-17 took the crowd by storm with his two flights which included one bomb drop run. Then in the second flight, he dropped some parachutes. Jim's friend and fellow New Mexcian(sp?) David Breedlove's P-47 rounded out the top four prizes we created for this event.
Speaking of parachutes, Bill Holland and his friend had one dropped from the big red J-3 Club. Bill's F-4U Corsair had a retract servo
problem and he had to bring her in on the grass instead of the 10,000 foot long runway that we were using.
First Lubbock Scale Fun Fly (Sept. 24, 2005)
1. Winner of People’s Choice, Pilot’s Choice, and Best Military for his
B-17, Jimmy Cowman.
2. Winner of the Top Dawg award went to David Breedlove and his
P-47 razorback.
3. Best Civilian trophy went to Bill Holland and his Spirit of St. Louis
(with Jimmy Stewart sound chip installed!).
4. Winner of the Most Flight Award went to David Singleterry and his
Hangar 9 T-34. (the only local to win anything)
The prizes were real neat. We bought some of those Postage Stamp metal diecast model airplanes and fixed up some wooden plaques to mount them to for our awards. We also had a lot of sponsors that donated some great stuff to give away or for our club to raffle off and earn some $$ for the club treasury. Howard Landreth won the Model Tech F-20 propjet arf. (Edit: Howard also won a coupon from
Vanguard Vancouver for x number of dollars off of a set of plans if I remember correctly).
