1 Attachment(s)
We have 20 Saturday night indoor fly-in events scheduled for the 2016 - 2017 winter indoor flying season at Roundtripper Sports Academy (RSA) in Westfield, Indiana. RSA is an indoor baseball practice facility with a very spacious flying area at 130' x 150' x 35'. The ground surface at RSA is comprised of artificial turf. Below are three videos from previous seasons to give you an idea facility's size and overall environment.

AMA membership is not required. Electric airplanes, electric helis (450 size and smaller) and electric multirotors only. Starting times will vary from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Starting times will be emailed and broadcasted via Twitter and Instagram (@rcjimn) one to two days prior to each fly-in. Please email me at [email protected] to be placed on starting time email notification list. As in past years, we are allowed to fly as late as we choose each Saturday night. See schedule below. Also, a schedule flyer is attached. We look forward to another successful indoor flying season! Tonight's indoor fly-in begins at 9:00 pm. I want to discuss a couple of two new rules that will be implemented for the remaining indoor flying season. Though first, I want to reiterate the importance of adhering to the flight line rule. All aircraft must be launched/taken off, flown and landed forward of the flight line. I’ve seen the flight line rule broken several times the past couple of weeks. Now onto a couple of new rules that will be implemented beginning tonight.
Rule #1 – Time Interval Flying We’ve had several incidents of drones/quadcopters and airplanes making contact in the air. This isn’t necessarily the fault of neither the drone/quadcopter pilots nor the airplane pilots. Mid-air collisions a part of indoor flying; however, the simple fact is that drones/quadcopters and airplanes aren’t very compatible in the air. Of course, the airplanes usually suffer the majority of the damage as a result of the drone/quadcopter and airplane mid-air collisions. Therefore, in order to keep the skies a little safer for everyone, I’m implementing the following flying schedule based upon 15 minute flying intervals. - Airplanes only for 15 min. - Drone/Quadcopters and Helicopters only for 15 min. For example, if the fly-in begins at 9:00 pm, the following schedule will apply - 9:00 – 9:15 – Airplanes only 9:15 – 9:30 – Drones/Helicopters only 9:30 – 9:45 – Airplanes only 9:45 – 10:00 – Drones/Helicopters only And so on. Please do not fly beyond the 15 min. intervals for your particular aircraft and manage your flying time accordingly. For example, if two minutes are remaining in your 15 min. time interval, please don’t launch your aircraft with the anticipation of flying a normal 5 or 6 minute flight. Please land prior to the beginning of the next 15 minute time interval. I want everyone to please remain aware of the time during the fly-ins and please adhere to the flying time intervals. It’s possible that I may lift this rule on nights with low pilot attendance. RC cars and trucks can be operated at any time. New Rule #2 – Establishment of RC Car/Truck Line A safety line for RC cars and trucks will be established approximately 5 ft. forward of the flight line. RC cars and trucks must be driven forward of this newly established safety line. This rule is to insure the safety of those in the pits and to prevent distracting pilots who are standing along the flight line. Also, this will prevent any collisions of RC trucks/cars with aircraft that are either taking off or landing. Possible future rule Currently, I’m not implementing the use of a frequency management system (i.e., frequency board), though this may happen in the future. Though I do expect F PV flyers to communicate with the other FPV flyers regarding the video frequency you will be using. Just a simple walk down the flight line and having a discussion with the other FPV pilots will be very beneficial to the entire group of pilots. Thanks for your cooperation. |
