Default Muffler for CS Olover Tiger 2.5 diesel

Apparently CS did not feel that a muffler was needed for this engine, so they didn't make one. Any Suggestions?

Other the the obvious 'don't use one' perhaps a PAW or Oliver Major muffler can be tempted to fi.

Clint Hill Engineering (Oliver Engines) may be able to help?

Or perhaps Rustler?

It's not all that straight forward to fit a muffler to an Oliver type engine.

Oliver have made a few different variations of mufflers over the years but all
have required the crankcase to be machined as shown in the pictures.

While you may get someone to do this it isn't going to be cheap and there's the
possibility that an Oliver ring muffler won't even a CS case.

You'd have to ask if a muffler is really necessary.

Below a "Clint Hill" Oliver Tiger mk3/6 with latest style ring muffler. The crankcase is machined to fit,

Left muffler is a cut down OT mk4 ring muffler with all but the front part removed.
This is to protect the front exhaust when the engine is buried in the solt English dirt.

Right muffler is original.

Oliver mk4 showing machining to take ring muffler.

Perhaps it is better to investigate the PAW version that requires the finned jacket to be machined down instead.

They can be had from FleaBay from time to time quite cheaply and of course would need 4 bolt holes drilled through it (instead of the three that come standard) and check the internal diameter of the ring against the outer diameter of the liner but it wouldn't be that far off.

File down the underside of the fins to suit, add gaskets and you are away!

Thoughts?

The muffler pictured is for the 29 to 35 range and although it does have the four bolt holes in it, it would be too large for a 15 sized engine - but you get the idea.

I now understand why my OT Major leaks so badly from the collector ring.

Stunning looking engine.

Any word on whether the Rothwell line will ever be put back into production?

No word but stranger things have happened. Who would have thought five years ago that the Oliver range would have been resurrected?

Charles, Is a muffler required where you fly. If not, I see no reason to add one to your

engine. It is not that loud in use. My CS Oliver is much quieter when flying than other

glow engines of similar displacement(Veco Tomahawk - .015" X 58' lines).

Must get this CS beast on the stand in the near future. I've inspected and cleaned it. Apart from being "grubby" as delivered (some workshop dust on the exterior and a little swarf in the case) it seems very well made. Good compression cold too. It flicks over with a satisfying "snap". There does not appear to be any binding.

I have added a hand made 1/64th" (0.4 mm) thickness 'automotive gasket paper' gasket to seal the front housing-to-case joint (not shown in the photo's). There was no seal there at all. A side benefit (the real reason for doing so) is it adds a little "end float" to the extended crank pin on the front crankshaft assembly. Clearance seemed a little tight on inspection.

Maris now has his sorted Steve.

I am hopeful I will not have the same issues.

A fresh thread will be started once mine is run. Be it good, bad or truly ugly, I will report the outcome.
