I know how you blokes feel. Here on the central coast of New South Wales we get double winter lows which recently have been genuine Cyclones. It gets very cold, wet and extremely scarey when you live within a stand of 80 foot gum trees.
Good luck!
Isn't Florida just above sea level with no mountains?

This is a very unfortunate weather combination a " NorthEaster" (a strong storm that lasts for several days) combined with a hurricane the latter peak effect lasts for maybe 8 hrs??
this could easily last a day in one area, they expect the highest tide ever recorded at Sandy Hook NJ for you folks down under that is a point of land that is only about 10 miles or so
that sticks out in the bay south of New York city at this point Washington, New York and Philadelphia are shut down no trains buses airports closed martin

AMB. you forgot the winter storm coming in from the Northwest. This is just like The Perfect Storm except it's worst will be on land. Sandy will come in south of us here in Western Connecticut, then wrap around us for the next couple of days. I used ot live on Mobile Bay in Alabama and we had a few bad ones there but they were gone in a less that a day. This one is going to come close to circling us with us being on the strong side. Our Govenor shut down the higways 20 minutes ago - good thing I didn't go to work. We still have power and cable but who knows how long with hours of 60 MPH winds starting tonight.
At least he generater is ready and the cars a full of gas I can siphon.

All ready cranking here in eastern Pa, expecting 60-70+ mph tonight, and power lines going down already. We are 150 mi from the coast and last year it cost one power company over $90,000,000 for repairs. from the Oct snow and hurricane. They are still begging people to evacuate the shore lines. You can't fix stupid!

RE: Hurricane Sandy
Godoy bless and protect you all. I just returned from a cruise this wknd, guess where?
Yes to the Bahamas, the greedy capt decided not to cancel and we sailed through the storm. In their GPS and radar they reported 80 mph winds and 20 feet swells.
It was not fun, people were falling in the hallways and vomiting. A hughe ship was dancing like it was a 20 footer.
So I know first hand there is a monster heading your way. Be safe and don't risk it.
Post back as soon as you have power and Internet

RE: Hurricane Sandy
With a weeks notice, they had plenty of time to prepare and/or evacuate. I wish the tornados here in Texas would give us 6 or 7 days notice to get our act together. I hope with any degree of intelligence no one discounts the seriousness of this storm. Like they say, "don't mess with Mother Nature"!

Hurricane SANDY! I pray for all that are facing this thing. In those prayers I hope you all find what we did after Katrina and I know you will. Good and kind people from all over this Nation that want to help and will do just that. After Katrina. The last thing on my mind was Model Air planes. One day, weeks after the storm was past and we were all wondering what would happen to us. The UPS guy hunts me down with some boxes. Yes, in those boxes was thing to get me back flying. All from folks I have never met and to this day do not know. I do know this. In our little world of R/C we are loaded down with some great folks. Living in a small trailer with no room I built my little plane and found myself on the road to recovery.
My friends, of all the things these hurricanes break. The heart break is the worst. Of all the medicines to restore health, the best medication is the kindness of good people. Our prayers are with you and help is on the way!

We weathered the storm well here in Westmoreland County, Va. I only had to run the generator for two hours today. I fired up the wood burner yesterday, good thing since its cold today.

RE: Hurricane Sandy
Have been watching the TV news here over the past 24 hours, and this is so dreadful. Our thoughts are with all of you in it's path. The way New York etc. is all just smashed up is so terrible.
I know the area from South Carolina up to Boston along the coast and inland, as had some months there in '97 and '99.......It's very beautiful and special and no doubt over time will be back to being pristine.

Gossie the roads can be cleaned up in New York in several days, the subways ( underground) many routes flooded guessing but maybe 40% or more of travel there by subway
being salt water flooding will be many issues taking days if not a week to fix ( corrosion), shorts, blown transformers) with the electrical supply that runs the trains martin
and they have to be pumped out first
