Default Magnum 30 4 strk diese fuell enema

Ok got my Mag 30 strk back after 5 years a mess, gummed up valves, squeeky bearings grabbed the first prop I saw zinger wood 9v6, Out on bench Davis ABC mix put power to glow plug and off it went lots of engine noise running about 8700 then slowly began to sound pretty good revs slowly climbed to about 11700 would not idle below 3300 but good transition
glow driver used for starting only pulled off after 10 seconds or do

no would not start without glow on. Interesting that it did that well since glow plug will not stay activated by diesel fuel I think requires catalytic action with alcohol
well clean degummed innards now compression normal for its type martin

Forgot did pull valve cover and poured diesel fuel over rocker arms and down push rod tubes valves freed right up on hand flips before starting

Proof of a little known quirk ... some glow engines will run, and in some cases quite well, on model diesel fuel.

Hobbsy has run an early high compression Saito 65 (or 80?) as a diesel.

Fiery at 11700 almost no oil or smoke out the stack ( not good) opened needle a turn at 10000 we had it. I just considered this clean up procedure when I did it martin

IIRC this was documented as far back as 1955 or '56 when Aeromodeller was publishing extensive data on fuel consumption testing. They ran an OS 15 (I think) on diesel-and found it ran quite well-and much more economically than on glow fuel-but needed the plug continually energised to sustain running.

Chris power wad pulled from plug after 10 seconds sorry I did not measure the temp hot enough to fire it off heat retained and keep running even st 3500 or so compression not tat high either on the lean run melted off the pressure line where attached to the muffler martin

will have to repeat and measure temp just to see just a guess but sipped fuel only about 3/4 ox in tank

looks like we chuck the glow fuel on this one nice only one can to take to the field

Martin, experiment with larger props in small steps, a larger prop will keep the combustion temperature higher. Also, lean the LS needle a little as you load it down. At some point you'll max out the benefit of the larger prop. A larger prop allows more time for cylinder filling which leads to higher compression pressure and higher combustion temperature.

When I ran the .80 mantioned above by Fiery I ran a 13x6 Scimitar, in fact it was the same Scimitar that I ran as a glow. Running on Davis ABC mix the Scimitar would only turn 5,500, I switched to a Bolly 13.5x8 and it instantly revved to 8,792, it ran smooth as silk and no labored sound at all. The idle is barely readable at 1,541.

I may play with my Saito .30 tomorrow and use the Gadget plug to increase the compression slightly.
