So that's what that's for. I'm surprised they used plastic for a diesel tank.
I put a PAW carb on mine, yours looks like it came with a carb.
I ran mine, puts out OK power, but the coolest thing, (other than the dual exhaust), is I've had it idle for fifteen minutes then gunned it an it accelerated perfectly.

I ran my Heron (red head) at the weekend with the mufflers on. SOOO quiet, the mufflers though are made from copper tube, the look original though. This engine is destined for a 40" Simplex witrh R/C assist.

Pretty sure the AM engine review said the Mufflers were plated brass.
My test stand configuration prevents muffler installation. The exhaust holes on the mufflers are the smallest I have seen for an .09 c.i./1.5 cc engine.

I rounded off the tank, then put fuel lines in. I mount the tank with a 4-40 rod, the tank threaded on, then a nut and a locking nut, all sealed with some red silicone.
Now I have to design and build a 50's style plane. I'm thinking of maybe somewhere around 4' wingspan.

I got 9000 rpm with a JZ 8x4 wooden prop. It would idle at 3000 rpm slowly coming up to 4100 rpm, then it held 4100 rpm for over 15 minutes.
After extended idling, it puffs white smoke for a second when I give it throttle.

That's pretty much what I was thinking, but it's $111 to my door.
Being a scratch-builder I would make it an elliptical wing, no lifting tail, maybe a "V" tail. I do have all the RCM&E plans for the last 5~7 years, I have thought about doing a Barnstormer Baby, it's for a BabyBee .049.
I built this for my PAW 55: It needs a bigger stab.

I took my ME Heron out of my Tomboy Free Flight model a few month ago. After cleaning I noticed that the nylon tank had indeed split along the seam.
Might try a Delrin one next.
As for the cylinder gasket problem, an old friend showed me a trick awhile ago. Rather than cutting a paper gasket, clean the flange and give it successive coats of automotive engine gasket goo, leaving a day or so between coats so that it dries thoroughly. Worked very well with on a Taipan mk13 "blackhead" diesel.

I hate the nylon tanks on Snipes and Herons, the feed pipe sticks out the side and is most inconvenient when mounting the engine. The early anodised alloy tanks were much nicer. Cost cutting I guess.
I picked up a used set of silencers for my best Snipe. They are original, but are 'fabricated' from brazed brass, different to the silencers supplied with the later engines shown in the photo's above. I'll post a photo at some stage.
