Default EvoJet 90 Bobcat

took her out to he field today and put in 3 great flights. pushed the bobcat along nicely, very responsive throttle in the landing environment and great acceleration out of slow flight dirty configuration. she climbed out nicely at around 60 degree climb angle while dispensing smoke.

we had 3 minutes of fuel remaining and probably 20 oz of smoke when we commenced high alpha to climb out pass.

overall nice piece of gear with a simple install. [sm=thumbup.gif][sm=thumbup.gif]

happy camper i look forward to putting some fuel through her and the forthcoming EvoJet 180

cheers

Here's a start-up video of the evoJet 90 taken at Fresno jets. The spool-up time is unbelievable!

How does the Elan fly with the 90? Thinking of getting one for my booster 80. I assume it goes ok if there is no unnecessary weight onboard. Less fuel, no powerbox etc.

InboundLZ would better be able to comment on this, but I can tell you the performance improvement over a Behotec J66 was amazing. The vertical was not unlimited, but it was all you would need. This is a great plane/motor combination.

Tuomas,

The Booster 90 changed everything about how the Elan flew. Removing the J66 and installing the B90 was a simple deal. We picked up thrust and perfromance and lost weight at the same time. The ultra quick spool times made the Elan really a fun plane to fly. My son was able to do some great short approaches knowing that engine would spool instantly if he had to punch out.

If I was building a Elan today it would have a Booster 90 installed.

Thanks for the info! I will probably order an Elan right when the wallet says yes..

Dave

You posted on the Elan thread that you had a flame out and lost the Elan, have you found out the cause of the flame out yet?

Mike,

we just got word back this week. The flame-out was caused by a lack of lubrication to the bearings. Dave was using kerosene out of a 55 gallon drum that had been sitting at his shop for a while. The lack of lubrication was probably caused by dirt or water in the fuel. Most local turbine pilots have since purchased filters for filling their cans from 55 gallon drums.

Needless to say, it was a very upsetting loss, especially for Jake!

I use a Mr Filter Funnel to transfer fuel from my storage into my flight fuel can, its for filtering water and debris for marine use, they are made in the US so should be easy to get.

I do and have for the last two years, never had a fuel problem or lack of bearing lubrication, but there again my fuel is filtered four times before it reaches the turbine.
