Having been to an EC meeting, been nominated for EVP and finally received a Sep. issue of MA, then took time to study that a bit, I am very concerned just where and what AMA is going to wind up with. Somewhere between AMA and the FAA there is, IMO, a serious matter just rumbling deep enough to create a serious eruption. Under the situation that now exists in this country, whatever boils up will not be the best that our AMA needs. After studying things a bit, I am concerned that there are two heads butting and the result does not appear to be the best for the real aero-modeler. Government will never back down. The AMA hierarchy, will, IMO, also try to stay their place, but when push comes to shove, government will win over those "... kids with their toy airplanes...".
Therefore I request that anyone that wishes for aeromodeling as we know it now, petition to the AMA Staff and elected officials to get together and come to terms. As an aviator for 41 years, 13 military and 28 civil airline, AMA will never win over FAA. Congress will side on the FAA's position. That is, in my mind, a sure thing.
For any of you that are reading this, my thoughts are that we modelers come down hard on the Executive Council to forget this toy-drone stuff and save real aero-modeling, at least for the current time until some real issues are settled.
AMA Pres. Bob Brown, in the August 2014 issue gave you a clue. While he did not say anything against this invasion of ...copters and such, he did leave one big clue in the next-to-last paragraph right hand column, page 6. You can darn well know that the people making all these new toys, those that are showing them and making YOU want those new toys will not be on the side of our normal model AIRPLANE facilities. If you ignore my warning, I do hope you are right, but I am not betting on such.
