The colour scheme was never any help to me in the air, I have an easier time seeing deltas. But I have never been a fan of black and yellow, yet I know others think it works great.

My eye sight is not real good, but it's good enough to drive a car and to get a driver's license. That said, if you practice flying small planes at lower speeds...you train yourself to recognize what's going on out there.
The other thing is to keep the plane in close. You can fly a pretty decent routine with a small 150 mph plane without letting it get much more than 300 feet away. Remember that 300 to the left and 300 to the right adds up to a decent sized lap. Flying in the middle of an open field helps, since your flight pattern isn't as limited.

Whoa!
the Mini Magnum R is an outstanding speed machine capable of speeds in excess of 200mph.
Not one radar report I have ever seen of a West .50 equipped Magnum R exceeded 165mph. The same engine on a Screamin Demon will pull 170 or a bit better. It took an FAI pylon engine to get the first Magnum report near 200 I ever saw. Same for the Nelson FAI powered Demon courtesy of CombatPigg. It takes a heck of a pile of power and a clean airframe to get up there. A SpeedCobra on an OS .91 DF can barely hit 200.
For a brief period in my life I wrote box and ad copy for hobby products.. and got a first hand look into how much BS can infiltrate these claims.
If someone can prove this Mini Magnum speed claim, then great, I totally retract.

I think it was back in the 1960s when the USAF dropped a guy from outer space and he hit some amazingly high speed in his free fall. Now, if you took a Magnum, filled it to the brim with concrete and dropped it from the same height.......I'll bet it's capable of their claim?
A long stroke Nelson 40 might get a full size Magnum over 200. I don't know if a Nelson FAI is feasible to work into this plane, I suppose if you did some serious craftwork you could.
There is no way that a West 50 puts out enough power, it just doesn't have the air handling capability of the Nelson with the small diameter crankshaft / intake tract.

Oh good, you were being skeptical.. [8D]
They really did tell me on the phone that one of their factory demo team models was clocked at 248, and I don't mean kph though I would believe that.

Always lots of "speed claims" to go around I find in this hobby.[sm=50_50.gif] I've learned quite a bit and experienced some different speeds with a few different models in the last couple of years and what it takes to get a model there, and I chuckle when I hear some people talk at club meetings and fun flys and such.[sm=lol.gif]

Many, many dubious* claims indeed. Most of the folks that fly stuff that is fast for real don't BS like that though. "Most".
Another thing to learn over time is when to argue and when to just walk away shaking your head. Mind you I haven't quite learned that entirely myself..
MJD
* too many dubes I suppose

The worst Mythomaniacs are the street rodder / 1/4 mile dragster wannabees, with the fictional dyno claims and elapsed timess that never happened. .
Weston's marketing strategy must work, it's not easy to stay in business with such a specialized product.
Check this ad out....how much actual R&D do you think went into the statement that these planes are great for combat? Give me a break...... a BIG break.........

I'm pretty sure the instructions for my magnum say 240 KPH not MPH... 150 MPH, pretty close to what I've seen on a radar gun. I'm not sure but I think the box art said capable of 200+ MPH... I just recovered and assembled a new one this week, I'll have a look.

2 bills aint gonna happen in a Mag without pain, money and perfect dive/day. Definately not with the power systems listed there.
I'd guess the lekkie in the vid at about 140. Don't get me wrong the Mag is an awsome and cool plane! All your buddies will be impressed for sure but 200, nah. I like mine and go plenty fast with it but it's not the fastest thing I've flown or seen.

The box art does say capable of 200MPH+ and the instructions do say "estimated speed 220+ nitro version no wheels", doesn't give the units of measure... Interesting that the pictures show a O.S. 40LA motor in the "General Information" but the Weston .50 on the stickers placement page.
Anyway after alot of flights on the old original Magnum all the gear is swapped over to a nice fresh airframe. The old one was one of the first that were brought into the U.S. by a company in Florida, I don't remember when but I guess 8 or 9 years ago, maybe more though. Not too many Magnums survive that long I bet.
Happy Thanksgiving all.

Put the old trusty Weston .50 in, I love that motor. I need to sell the F3D.

My West .50 is a real bear too, easy to handle. I flew mine on a Magnum R for a while on the stock Genesis pipe, then moved it to a Screamin Demon with an open pipe set up for 20.5-21k. On an 8.8x8.75 or 8.8x9.0 prop trimmed to 7.9"-8" it goes like snot.

Mine seems happiest on a 8x10 APC.. I just has a great idle, good throttle response, and makes good top end power with out fiddling or drama.
