Viper 500 speed plane
Hi all
I was thinking of getting the GP viper 500 as a speed plane. First of all is this a good choice vs. the patriot and other full bodied planes wih landing gears? I was thinking of powering it with a rossi 53. There is a member at my club with an aristi with a ROSSI 53, It screams even though he has a 11 x7 master airscrew plastic prop(yuk) on it. I would think the viper would be faster on the same engine. The guy says it is the short stroke 53. Is there such a thing?
I am thinking 10x8 apc
mmhmm powwer[sm=spinnyeyes.gif][sm=biggrin.gif]

RE: Viper 500 speed plane
I was just ready to post on this as well. I actually purchased the VIper 500, it’s on the way.
I was thinking about the Rossi as well, but I understand the in Quickie 500 racing you need to stay with 40 or smaller. Never competed in a Quickie 500 race, but I would like to build this ship so it’s ready to go when I do, with the very best power.
Any other recommendations for engines?
Cheers.

RE: Viper 500 speed plane
This will be a fast plane with any of the available sport .40 - .53 2stroke engines out there. In most cases these engines will take a Quickee500 design in the 110-130 mph range depending on your set up.
Quickees fly very well at these speeds, but aerobatic performance will be limited. Wing loadings are low, so take offs and landings will be a breeze.
I can't imagine a much better speed plane to start out. In fact, my 2nd plane ever was a Q500.

If you want to compete, get a Nelson or a Jett engine.
You can find them at www.pspec.com (Nelson), or at www.jettengineering.com (Jett)
These things are expensive and not intended for engine rookies though, so if you are an engine rookie get someone to help you or start out with a sport engine. They don't like lean runs at those rpms and there's no throttle...
It might not be such a bad idea to start out with a sport engine anyway, because a Quickee plane on a Nelson engine can be a bit of a monster on take off (especially on grass... lots of torque, tiny landing gear, tiny rudder...)

RE: Viper 500 speed plane
Q500 planes are super fun. I flew them for years. They also work well for fun flys with a little less engine. I did really well with mine with (20 years ago) K&B 40 engine on a Mac's tuned pipe. This thread makes me want to do it again!

RE: Viper 500 speed plane
thanks for the replys. Just want to clear some stuff up. Im no going to race this in any pylon races its just for fun. While im a good engine person(alot of older club members ask me for help on stubbern engnes) I would like a throttle and to keep the price under 250 for the engine. What is the best throttlable engine for under 250 dollars for the viper(price not including tuned pipe will pay extra for that) I want it to be fast. The only aerobatics i would do with it is BIG loops and rolls thanks

You are in luck.
Go to www.jettengineering.com
Click on hangar sale.
Follow the page down, and you will see a complete Sport Jett .46 engine (with throttle) for $220. This includes the tuned muffler.
This is a great sport engine that will take the plane over 150 mph. Or, you can cruise around the sky at 1/2 throttle at 100mph.

Thanks that is looking good. But what do you think the rossi 53 can do on that same plane? With the included mini pipe? With a full lengh pipe. Using APC props(they are 1 of the best for speed right?)

Daven,
I know it's off the subject, and I think you had mentioned it before in another post, but what is the plane you use in your avatar? (sp)
Thanks

That is a Quarter .40 called the "Vendetta". It is sold by Lyle Larson, and can be seen at this site.

Unfortunately, I lost that plane at the Nats this year flying in a heat against Randy Bridge and the eventual Champ Tom Scott. Caught some bad air coming around three and planted it hard.

RE: Viper 500 speed plane
The jett .50 is a great engine also, I have one on my Kyosho Spitfire. It will be slightly faster than the .46, but it also costs a bit more.
Either will be extremely fast.
