Just an update the Magnum is still alive and well.......
Have approximately 50 flights on it with the SJ .50. That engine has been flawless. If the plane survives the rest of the season, may finally go with the .56LX. Just trying to decide if the cost is worth the minimal speed increase I may get with this plane? (Getting 150 or so as it is). It sure is tempting, especially since the style of the Magnum more than anything, draws a lot of positive attention.
You know the old saying though, if it ain't broke don't fix it........

I have an SJ50, and I believe it is capable of 160-165 in a Magnum R. I'd have to see a radar gun to believe it capable of 180+. It will only just haul a skinny delta into the high 170's. On deltas I flew mine mostly on 8.8x8.75,9,and 9.25, unless using a sport prop then primarily 9-8.
On the West I set up an open MAC pipe for 21k on the ground, using trimmed flight props. The best flight speeds were on an 8.8x9.25 trimmed to 7.9" which worked well on that pipe setup. But crappy launching, kinda clawed for air for a bit until the prop started working better. And this combo was maybe equal to the SJ50, maybe a hair faster on the Demon, not enough to remember clearly. Point being the slightly less powerful predecessor to the .52v1 wasn't notably more powerful than the Sport Jett .50, and of the two I know which engine will be running like a bear 5 years from now on whatever sport fuel I have. But in fairness the West .50v1 runs like a top and is easy to handle, although I did have a first run rod failure, quickly remedied I should add (1 week turnaround from UK).
If I was choosing between the two I think I'd enjoy owning the .56LX more. Esp since you can get it in rear exhaust, although that is not ideal for the Magnum. I never mounted a rear exhaust in mine, but I think if tilted with a modest rise header it would work? I am trying to remember if I've seen pics of one fitted with a rear exhaust engine. Hey, maybe you don't want rear exhaust like I prefer, I'm just rambling,,

Hey. Sorry I am so slow to respond. For some reason I wasn't getting my usual email messages from RCU stating you guys had been responding.
One thing I forgot to mention was I am using a 9x7 prop for a solid launch and was being humble stating it gets 150. Guys in the club feel it is up in the 160+ range. We just don't have a decent gun to run any consistent numbers. I dont like to inflate numbers I can't confirm so I always round down.. Hahaha.
The rear exhaust would be nice but a lot of work. Looks like this guy did it:

Well all the guts are in. Still have to make all the final trim adjustments etc. Major bummer is the CG with everything as far aft as I could get it is running around 90-100 mm from wing root. Looks like im gonna have to add close to 10 ounces to the floor behind elevator servo unless I can come up with something else to get the target 150 mm.
Definetly gonna junk those nylon clevises for metal ones and upgrade a few things to make it safer. Otherwise a very straightforward build. Took about 8 hours and I'm slow.

Couple years worth of data on Magnums with Jett's and a variety of props.

So Magnum with SJ50, 160 easy, a few mid high 160's, one 170. I believe it is true to say a Demon has about 10 - 15mph on a Magnum - on same engine - from the numbers I've seen to date.
