Default German Speedcup 2013

Hi guys,

some pictures from the Speedcup 2013 at Osnabrueck /Germany.
All planes except one (it was flown by a KID!! but still reached 186 mph) reached more then 200 mph. Topspeed at that day was 280mph.

WOW!!!
"Easy on the sticks!"
I can't even imagine trying to control them at those speeds.
Are they "clocked" at level flight or diving?

It is a 200 meter long horizontal speed track. Not a dive.
At both ends are cameras installed.
They recognize if a plane passes by and based on the distance the system calculates the speed.

They dive and then time the model after the pullout. If you look back at older posts on other years, some radar data shows how much they slow down from the entry to exit. If their entry to the timing gate was out of a level turn, the numbers would be much lower. They do have an upper limit on wing loading which limits the amount of power gravity provides. Look at the speeds achieved by Dynamic Soaring that exceed anything with a prop powered RC model.

the max wing load is by the electric driven models 75Gramm/ dm2 = FAI legal, with combustion engine it is 100Gramm/dm2.

Gravity is not a big issue, it is power ( good set up) and a good design of the model.

Best regards Michael

If gravity is not the big issue, then I suggest you guys prove this by only allowing a flat turn into the speed trap next year. I would expect at least a 30 mph (50 km/h) drop in speeds, perhaps more.

Can anyone post some specs on the electrics in order to get these speeds?

From what I can see these guys are true hotrodders who have invented an event and a set of rules that suits their desires.
I'll bet these guys are all familiar with pylon racing and perhaps some of them are racers, too...?
Regardless, this "speed" event is designed for those who want to play with seriously high timed, lowered torque engines that need a "boost" from gravity to get on the pipe for the 200 meter dash.
I doubt there are very many people who do not respect this event who could show up at the next contest and beat them at their own game.

Getting on the pipe is one thing, but they lose about 80 mph from the entry point to the exit point in a distance of only 300 meters. To say that gravity has little to do with their speeds is disingenuous.

HP, your point is well taken but the bigger picture is that these guys have managed to spawn an event with rules that are within [what I think are] reasonable limits and rules that seem to be mutually accepted by the guys who spend their money and time to participate.

Those guys use CNC billeted molds to make wings, fuselages and props, some serious effort involved as well as a bit of cash I would imagine. I have seen a couple of those names mentioned in the European pylon circuit as well as soaring heck I saw some serious cash in equipment in those photos. Wish I had the money to compete in that type of event.

I certainly appreciate them bringing this niche in the rc world to us. I would have no idea that these types of events even existed had they not posted here. I commend all who pursue these types of endeavors, while I play NASCAR in the sky with my Cubs and Cessna's!

I only wish that at some point they would share the exact technology of the timing system they are using so we could hold an F3S event over here and see what we could accomplish.
Until then we are on our own to hold our own events and have fun with radar guns etc.

Those full carbon jobs sure are pretty!

From what it sounds like the have a camera that is tripped at each end of the course, and the the speed is calculated by time on a computer. Which I think under AMA rules would be considered traps and not allowable under our operating rules.

It looks like a much more difficult task to clock very fast model airplanes this way [with optically enhanced electronics] than it is to clock 1/4 mile dragsters.

That´s correct.
The equipment is very accurate. At this point in time they have cameras with 30 fps but for FAI-Records they will install high-speed cameras with 1000 fps!!
And if it´s good enough for the FAI (which is THE organization for air records!) why not for the AMA?

Wrong, not within 200m. The speed drops that´s correct maybe 20mph but no more. Not within 200m.
