I had Shawn cut me a couple of his wings for a scratch built plane. The plane is pretty much done, the carbon fiber landing gear is in the bag now. The plane will be ready to fly before the snow melts here.

I have a is 91vrdf , is this a good candidate. Might be a good candidate to get it off the "shelf queen engine" status.....have a couple custom engine mounts made up also.

That's what I had in mind for mine. With the tales of limited bearing life over 21k, the plan is to prop it for a bit less than that. I think a composite 10x8 might be a good start point for this setup. I also snagged an OPS .80 which will run all day at 22-23k but I have modest concerns over disc area. I doubt 9" props would work on this Macchi, the high pitch and subsequent pitch speed to properly load a 10-15cc DF engine would be way overboard for this airframe. An 8" pitch prop in the high teens sounds about right to me.

Yup, those are 9x10. Honestly I am not sure and they may work okay - but my gut tells me they are better suited to the 175-200 mph group of RC speed models = smaller airframes. Perfect for a .91 delta or 4' span speed model, Speed Kobra, small ME163. Never hurts to try. Well.. not true, if it is a hand launch model that isn't always the case - no options.

I get ya. Needs to be a clean smaller airframe than the 202. Not that the machi is not clean, just a bit big maybe?
I have a framed up SD with a custom mount for the 91, but it got shelved a couple years back as my interests changed a bit. I think it'll just be a brick though, and not a real speed gain from my 60lx version.

No it would be a macho exercise to fly it (the .91 delta) you saw how fun the .65 was/is. Yeah I think the Macchi is clean, but I have the feeling it is simply too much airframe frontal area and volume for the 9" higher pitch props to be of benefit. Since the airframe isn't going to go 190 the excess prop pitch becomes a loss in efficiency due to excess angle of attack. I think more hp will be transmitted to the airframe by the disc area of a 10" prop and that the pitch you can spin at suitable rpm will be sufficient to bring the airframe up close to the potential top end. Or .. I'm full of it and the 9" prop works great- but I'm betting on the 10" for now. I have a modified APC 10x8 balanced and polished up as a 10-15cc prop master.. getting prices to make a mold and props so I don't have to.

No matter what, they will go well and look/sound cool doing it. Love the design. If I get 150 out of it I will be pleased. More even better!

I think 150 should be pretty easy. It is cleaner than my Little Toni with the 91vrdf on it, and it is good for about 150 on 30%. The 10x8 would probably get you there. If you get some carbon ones made let me know, I will probably go a few.

The wood and foam prototype fitted with a Rossi .61 spinning an APC 11x11 at 12K was good for about 150 and that was with fixed gear. While sorting out the engine and pipe combo I did a few flights with the pipe way too short and an APC 9x10. Although much slower I did not have any issues getting it off the ground.

Well then, that is good news indeed! Looks like we may be in for better than my pessimistic guesses. Maybe we will get somewhere with the 9x10's. I was warned about expecting much bearing life over 21k on the .91, so I planned to stay a hair under that with a bit more prop load. I am pretty sure it'll spin the 9x10's higher. I know the OPS can spin up 22-23k without worry though.
Unless that was a speed timed Rossi - sounds like a pattern engine - yeah I don't think the 9x10 would knock your socks off.
TokinRV - yes I think you should get a Macchi, then there would be two of them in reasonable proximity to each other. With similar or identical powerplants. Sounds fun to me. Shawn does a real nice job on the airframe.
