Anyone received their short-kits yet? I guess I'm on the wrong coast. I guess Mike's wife didn't tell the post office that I'm right below British Columbia...

Here’s an update on that – mid week I got 4 out of the 11 kits back due to mistakes on the customs waybill. So I just reshipped them and these have tracking, & I’ll write the individuals involved shortly with the tracking info so at least you know what the heck’s going on. The rest, I’d expect them anytime, when I used to ship these it would take one to two weeks, usually >10 days. But they eventually got there, none were ever lost that I recall. There have been some changes in the export process since the last time I shipped anything 5-6 years ago.

As for our head-banging friend Rudeboy, I was rather surprised to find out how long yours was going to take. We could have upgraded the service for only 90 bucks..

I owe you all a message with the LHS materials list and the manual.. I’ll get that out tonight or tomorrow.

This weekend looks like I can cut the first set of parts for the FIRE version with CG tank, and get the prototype on the building board.

Thanks for the update, Mike. Customs can be a bear, sometimes for no apparent reason. Please let me know when the full kits become available, as there are some guys around here that can't wait to see mine fly. This area is a hotbed of pylon racing, so there are a lot of Nelson short-stroke engines laying about collecting dust.

My Nelson turns out to be a SS Q500 with 9.5mm carb and Ultra Thrust tuned exhaust - according to Dave Shadel. So it will still be a great sport speed motor, but it ain;t the Form 1 derivative the original ad said. Honest mistake, got it sorted out with the seller just fine,

Oh btw I designed a 6-point mount for the Nelson so I'll have to whip up a Demon for it. Problem is the exhaust is almost 90 to the cylinder and very low clearance. Either a belly pan for depth, or a pair of Jett oval CG tanks across the bay. Dunno yet.

I am in no hurry. I'm leaving for a race in Italy tomorrow, and it's 3 more racing trips in 6 weeks after this weekend, my weekends are filled. 90 bucks for "upgraded service" is a blatant rip off...

I haven't seen mine yet, but I'm not surprised. Postal service down here is pitifully slow.

I have had several packages (both going and coming) that got to Montgomery and just stopped for several weeks.

I just got home from the flying field and found a nice little box on the door step. Woo Hoo!

Mine will probably be a little slow. Slow on the construction that is. I'm sure the Jett 428 will be sufficient to stimulate my adrenal glands. Still finishing up a project but this is next in line.

Thanks for making these available Mike! The new plans look great. Hey, what are your thoughts on center tails vs. tip tails? The winglets sure look sexy but is there any tradeoff on launching or handling?

Regarding the tail feathers...
It mostly depends on what your looking to do with it. You have less interference drag with the winglets over the two vertical stabilizers in the center. You can make the winglets look pretty hot with a bit of work blending them in (be sure to add a bit of wash-in to them). If your going for full out fast I have been told, by those in the know, a single vertical stab is even better.
As you can see I went with the winglets.

I'm leaning toward a single fin. A single larger surface is always better than two (or more) smaller ones. The "winglet"/ tip-plate effect is tempting but at full-scream, the induced drag is quite low compared to the total drag. Having owned a couple of Outlaws, I like the single fin as it provides a convenient handle for launching. It also simplifies the linkage if you want a rudder. My $.02.

The twin fins probably had more sales appeal / coolness factor....
I'd like to see a side by side comparison done with the same engine, same day.

Hi all,

I'm home this weekend and chillin' out. Quick errands in town this morning then I'll get that stuff emailed out, plus a few recommondations/mods. Yup I am late - since when is the post office faster? Glad the kits are rolling in.

Cheers

The twin fins look cool, winglets even cooler, single fin not as cool as either of the other two but the best for all out speed.
Your right CP same engine same day would be the only way to know for sure.

I have got to get mine in the air and see how it all worked out using the winglets, blending and all of the control linkages buried internally.

In my inbox this morning was a picture of a short-kit Demon already framed up minus fins.. must be springtime!

I forgot to mention in the notes about the spar fixture - it's pretty self-explanatory. Build the two fixtures and support the spars on them between ribs 2 & 3.

I am having the most insane annoying $%#@ persistent trouble with Chrome or Firefox crashing repeatedly on two things - RCU and Outlook. Unless I copy my reply every 10 seconds it's a time bomb. I have retyped replies on these threads 3-4 times. When I come to my senses I paste from Word.

I also keep getting email notifications that someone has sent me a PM, but I can't see them in my inbox. I've had some trouble sending and receiving PMs on RCU for a while, so if someone is trying to reach me, the best way is just to email me at [email protected]
