So the nose ring will need a little love for either engine choice......

Top sheeting done, having a cocktail and going to bed, but all in all SD work started, Jett 76 for Dago Red finally apart, and my YS 60R put away for an airframe that is forthcoming

Feels good to play with my toys again.

I would probably be in for a kit how about a 24-26" version as well for electric! Whoop.

I have prototyped and tested a 26" version which I have called .25 size or .15-.25 size depending on the day of the week. It is a nice size for electric, just working out a few details re mounting etc. 160mph on an OS 25 vf-df, quick on a good .15 - so it's perfect for a Jett .35.

So I went to Henry Nelson's place today to get carb put on my Nelson 40 SS. Let me say this again"Henry Nelson is a GREAT GUY and if you have never met him you have no idea how nice he is." He hand fit a carb on my engine even though he is no longer doing this work, it took him a few hours.

This engine may or may not not see a delta but if it does it'll scream and idle.

What carb did you use and how it is retained in the Nelson?

Mr. Nelson fit a Supertigre to the engine, he did a little machining to make it fit. It is help in with 2 set screws. The man is a true craftsman.

I'd like to ask him to ID the unusual (I think) Nelson engine I picked up in the classifieds. Think he would?

I did before, no luck. I sent a picture to Dave Shadel, and he would know, and he said it was just a .40 SS. But it is FIRE, has FAI style 6-point mounting lugs, a 9.5mm Perry carb, and rear exhaust with an UT muffler.

Darn, iPad is dead, can't find all the old pics. I'll get a couple more pics up shortly.

I gotta find a new job.....anyone need an IT Director?

Sheeted with contest balsa and glassed top and bottom. Going with the K&B 7.5cc DF engine and not the Nelson for now. CF scuff plate on the belly and just need to paint it.

Looks like it should hold together through just about anything.

The elevons are top hinged with kevlar cloth. I trimmed the flash tonight and stared sanding. I really want to fly this before the weather gets too cold.

Like I said it should hold together pretty well.
I have one that's been ready to maiden for a couple of years now, I am in the process of building a new launcher when it's finished my SD will get maiden flight (finally).
The prop pitch I want to fly it on is too high for me to try a toss launch.

Here we go. I warned you guy's I'd be slow. Life can be busy. But today I broke out the blessed box from way up north and removed half of the contents. The second kit was carefully packed away, hopefully not needed for many years.

I've pulled my Jett 428 engine from my souped up Hots with tuned pipe and sport carb (147 mph in that ride!) Reviewed plans, parts and instructions. And I just finished hours of pouring through this thread. I've clipped every post that I thought had info I might possibly want.

Again, I'm not a fast builder. Some people say I'm lazy. I prefer to think of myself as thoughtful.

So it's finally bubbled up to the top of the list. I've got some parts to order, some thinking to do. Won't start this week or next, but its coming.

In reviewing, MJD's technique of fairing with the cardboard tube was revelation! I'm planning my construction and found this just in time. I'm still considering what I'll do on top. Lots of other good stuff in there from lots of other folks. Thanks to all. Give me a little time and I'll be posting stuff too.

Mike! Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike!

I'm still browsing all things Demon. Please tell me about the setup you show in post 39 of the SD .65 thread. This looks fantastic!

It's where you are slotting the TE of your fins to inset the CF strip. So it looks like a Dremel saw blade. Hard to find those these days, More importantly, what is the fixture? Tell us about the table, the tool, how it's set up. This is exactly what I've been after for years. I've done them by hand, then with a jigged X-acto blade, but this looks like the cat's meow for TE stiffening.

Come on, spill the real work! Inquiring minds want to know.

Hi Dave!
Glad to see you’re finally tackling the Demon. For reference, last time I framed one up in stock form, it took 5 hours before it was ready for glass and covering. But I must fess up that I normally take forever and obsess over 173 stupid little details..

That is indeed one of the infamous deadly Dremel saw blades. For safety’s sake I only spin it at full rpm.

The base is a genuine Dremel router base, I must have bought it 15 years ago or more, on sale somewhere so I thought “better have that”. It’s not great quality, but it works ok.

The fixture is a sheet of plywood ½ the thickness of the part to be slotted. There is a cutout for the shaft, so that only the front side of the blade clear of the shaft is protruding. You can of course move the plywood for a shallower cut. The blade is setup so that it drops in the Dremel collet from gravity and rests on the ply. Then the collet is tightened. The rear of the blades slides over the plywood and seems to keep the blade from wandering. Try it without and you may as well just attack the TE with a screwdriver.

I have successfully slotted and hinged 3/32” balsa with this same setup. I used Super Coverite for the hinge, CA’d in as usual. Worked perfectly. There is a thread somewhere where I posted pictures, likely a Simple 400 thread from '09 - '10. Can't find it at the moment.. need more caffeine.

Hi Mike,

I did finally spot that in post #35 you mentioned the Dremel router table. I've already got one on order and some of the saw blades. Thanks for the tips on setup, it sounds like exactly what I've been looking for.

Like you say, I'm currently in the obsess over all the little things mode. I'm sure it'll go together in no time when I finally have everything gathered up and decisions made.

Hey Mike,

I'm still digging through the various SD threads and spotted something interesting. In post #213 of the SD .65 thread, you commented that you converted a Hangar 9 tank into a bubbleless tank. Sounds interesting. What did you use for the bladder?

I've already got a Tettra 8.5 oz. bubbleless for the SD, but this sounds like something to file away for future use. Matter of fact, I have a plane that badly needs one but nothing fits.

Thanks,
Dave

Update...

Okay, I saw your later post that you didn't care to share the technique. I can honor that.

Dave

Dave,
Have you checked Dub Jett @ http://jettengineering.com/ He is currently reworking his web site, but you can call him. He has a full line of Jett Bubbless tanks. It is possible to "roll your own", but by the time you locate all the materials, like a fuel proof bladder, you could just as easily buy an off the shelf tank. Good luck, Greg

Yes, I'm familiar with Dub's tanks. Unfortunately this one is a problem installation and nothing fits. But right now it's set aside and the SD with one of Dub's racing engines and a Tettra tank is starting to take shape in my brain.
