SU-27 Propjet project
I dont know if it will be a speed plane or not, but I am having built an AK-Models su-27. It will have an OS91FX with retracts. Nothing special just havent heard of a flight report on it yet. Custonbuiltmodels.com is doing the building. They send me progress pics every week. It is almost ready. It is a great looking airplane in the videos on their websight.(AK-Models.com) Anyway, here is a pic of just the fuselage, I have more of wings, gear etc. if interested.

RE: SU-27 Propjet project
I am just about finished with mine, I has been a challenge to build, I just have to finish the ailerons up and I am going to glue the wings on and glass the whole thing. Just got the engine the other day putting a Jett 90 in mine.

Here it is complete and ready for covering and cockpit details. The missile rails lock in after the covering. It will have a pitts muffler as well. Came out very nice! Should be finished covering this week and ready for maiden next weekend

I bought an AK MIG 29 to build and learn on while I work on my other 2 'jets' One an F4D Skyray with DF and a twin turbine (JPX's) SU-27. I got a good deal on the 29 but would have prefered the 27. I'll be interested also in how she flys and the powerplant's performance. I wasn't going to go to a .90 as I was more interested in handling techniques than all out speed. Keep us posted!

RE: SU-27 Propjet project
I have it in hand now, just waiting on our new runway to be built next week or so. I tried it once on our grass strip and it wouldn't lift off. Not enough prop and elevator throw. Also, the grass is very tough on the gear. So far, it lucks to be an outstanding airplane. Just an update since I pomised an update/flight report.

First pic is APC, second is MA, James. ??
Hey Lear, was there anything in the manual about setting these up with some positive (up) elevator when in the neutrel position? It seems, we had a an F-4 a few years back that we had to set up that way. (I realize this is not the same plane, however, it's similiar)
My current "delta" plane requires 1/8" positive throw on elevator, ailerons at 0.

RE: SU-27 Propjet project
That would not be a bad idea to have some up in the elevator at the neutral position. The manual calls for 2.5" up and 2.5" down! Thats alot of throw! I can tell that it definately needs it to get off grass. When I have a long concrete strip it wont be necessary. Yes, I tried an APC and a MA the day of the pics (very observant!)

RE: SU-27 Propjet project
Just to let you know, the maiden flight went very well. I just cannot seem to get enough throw in those elevators. Upon touchdown, I have full up elevator and it is HOT! I have flaperons mixed in but I cannot seem to get both ailerons/flaps to move the same distance down. One moves more than the other. It is not that critical for aileron operation, but with flaps it's very critical as you well know. Once I get the flaps working right and more throw in the elevators, it should slow way down for landing. It looks so cool coming in really nose high with power on for landing. Landing it at idle power doesnt give enough airflow over the elevators. Anyway, I am still experimenting with all the little quirks about it and trying to figure out what makes the airplane happy. During level flight with the gear retracted, it rolls effortlessly and beautiful. It does tend to loose speed in turns like a ducted fan, but with all the propwash, controls are still very effective. Coming out of a half loop/split S manuever it was probably 110-140 mph. JUST A GUESS! Alot faster than anything else I have flown. Full throttle-level flight-gear up is PROBABLY in the neighborhood 100mph-110mph. ANOTHER GUESS! Either way, this airplane is very stable, plenty of power, very responsive and looks cool in the air. The only part that makes me nervous is slowing down. It is unpredictable at slow speeds b/c I have not played around with slowflight/stalls yet. I can not say yet if it stalls sloppy, violent or gentle. WHAT A BLAST!

RE: SU-27 Propjet project
Lear,
How did you end up with the all up dry weight? They advertise it as 8.25 lbs... did you (or the people who built it) get it at the advertised weight?
By the way, this question is just out of curiousity... it won't have a lot to do with the take off behaviour.
You might try moving the CG a bit more AFT... that might clean up the take off and stall behaviour a little... but be carefull though... check if it is as in the manual first...
How are the main wheels placed in relation to the CG (see plan)? If they are far behind the CG you will always need speed to pull it off the runway...

RE: SU-27 Propjet project
I have not weighed it yet. The CG is directly over the main gear which is good. I intentionally had it a little nose heavy for the first flight. You are right, it should handle better once moved back a little.
