Cool video! Fast planes! Is that typical landing speed?

The first one was about right... you could get it slower, but then it gets mushy.
The second one was a little too fast.

I've set mine down way faster than that, and it works if you don't do something crazy like pulling on the elevator while the plane is sliding across the field at 60-70 mph... (been there, done that, takes forever to get back down, ended up in a corn field )

Razor, which browser are you using? It doesn't work with Opera... I had to use Internet Explorer to get it to run...

That is a cracking video. Been waiting for awhile to see magnums tailchasing! I've got mine here with a below par engine to do it justice, but after firing up the v1, i was worried i'd trash £170 of engine......so until i get equainted with the magnum, a simple .40 is what will power it. (i know, whimp!)

Thanks for the comments. It was actually a friend of mine that shot the film - he did a great job to film anything at that speed.
The first one to launch is the Magnum, followed by the Magnum R. The Magnum R has a slight disadvantage because the engine has only just been run in, and still needs leaning out a little.
This was filmed on Wednesday evening, when we were having a club night at the patch. Other models flying included two turbines ( Boomerang and Savex L-39) - guess which ones were the most exiting to watch and had the people wanting more?

Who needs turbines?

bigger tank wont fit without mods (it's like that for me anyway)

sorry, cant help you with much else regarding flying, as i haven't flown the thing yet

So whimpy in fact, i've only got a .40 in it

Built a simple steerable take off dolly for it, which has been ground tested and works great! Got air whistles installed in the tail of my magnum, so crunch (perhaps not a good use of word) time will be this Saturday, providing weather is good. If not, i'm back to building the patriot and sorting out all the others

The settings are in the manual... use them. But dial in some 30-40% exponential.
Move the CG back to at least 135mm from the point mentioned in the manual. Manual says something like 120mm or so... not good for elevator control at low speeds.
The stock tank is good for at least 3 minutes... a little more if you fly it dry. Don't worry, 3 mins. is plenty.
I don't know about the new ones (yet), but the old ones needed clear tape on the decals to keep them in place. Check if they stay put.
Gap seal the hinge lines.
Balance your spinner and prop thouroughly. Make sure the prop is horizontal when the engine comes on compression.
For the first flights, get someone that can properly throw a plane.

I had read someone putting the c of G at 140mm, guess somehwere around there is okay.

Just to confirm wheere the manual mentions 8mm of travel that means 4mm either way on the airerons.

Whats the max for elevator (I'm on dual rates for take off and landing probably)

G'day Lee,
Rudeboy is right on the money with his advice, stick with the instructions for control surface throws, you'll find she got a pretty impressive roll rate at speed.
Start with at least 135mm C of G and go from there. Mines set at just over 140mm, nice slow landings with good elevator authority.
My gaps closed right up when I assembled it, I found no need for any sealing.

My CG is at 140mm, and my throws are like this:

30% expo on ailerons
20% expo on elevator

8mm means 8mm either way. That is 8 up and 8 down. You may end up in a situation during launch where you need that much throw.
At full speed this gives you an insane roll rate however, so you could apply dual rates if needed. I just fly mine with plenty of expo... so no switch flipping... and I can show off to the guys when I push the stick all the way to the side during a speed pass...

I don't remember what the manual says about elevator throw, but I think I used that setting too. Haven't changed a thing to the throws except fine trimming it and tweaking the expo to a comfortable setting.

Gluing a couple of strips of sandpaper to the sides of the belly around the CG may be helpful also. Gives the person who launches something to hold on to.

Gap sealing: clear tape on the bottom.

Picked her up yesterday, personaly I think I picked up a bargain. The kit with the West engine over here in the UK is £255. This one was built, and built very well indeed, fitted with brand new Futaba servos, switch, charging point, 1700 nicad and ready to go once I've fitted the Rx and set it all up. It is unflown and in immaculate condition all for £195.

Might be back with some questions later but tomorrow will be its first flight and if we can catch some video / pictures I'll post them up.

It currently has a 9x6 prop, I have read for max speed an 8x8 does the trick, is the 9x6 or 9x7 okay for the first few flights?

Yep the 9x6 will be just fine........Is that a plastic spinner out the front there, if so, do youself a favour and replace it with a balanced aluminium one.
