Default OS 46AX vs 50 SX on A Tuned Pipe which one for my new Patriot?

Guy's I am getting ready to build my 46 sized Patriot and I have read the article about the new OS 46AX in the current issue of Model Airplane News and it sounds like a real sweet running engine and I have a Macs Pre Tuned header and Quiet Tuned Pipe? Which will give me the most power? I did read in the article that the 46 AX likes 10% to 15% nitro and will ping (pre ignition)The reason I ask about the nitro content is because I run 15% Power Master with some extra castor oil added in all my smaller glow engines unless I need more nitro. Right now Hobby People has the 46AX on sale for 99:99 so I can just drive down and pick one up its a great price. I just thought I would ask and see what the opinion was on the 46AX. The plane doesn't need to be my fastest plane I just wanted something I could fly anytime so the engine needs to be dependable.
Thanks All and have a safe and good holiday.

The .46 AX is a very nice running engine. We started allowing them this year in our racing class and they are definately faster than the .46FX.

I've tried every racing prop on the engine, but it hauls a quickee best with a 10x7 prop in the mid 120 mph's.

Not really familiar yet with the .50sx, but not sure if its worth the extra 50-60$

Thanks Dave, I am going to go ahead and try the 46AX the price is great and I dont know if the 50SX is worth the extra money either plus I will be running a Macs Pre tuned Quiet pipe also. I will try the 10x7 I am guessing thats an APC prop I had planned on running an APC 10x8 ?
I will let you know how it runs on the pipe.
Thanks Viper

Yep, its an APC.

This engine developes it maximum h.p. between 13,000 and 13,500 RPM.

After you have it broken in, use the prop that puts you in that area. The 10x7 normally does, the 10x8 is a little big despite O.S. recommendations of using larger props on this engine.

Thanks Dave, I might need to tune the pipe to run at that rpm as well.
Thanks Joe

Dave, what fuel are using in your 46 AX? I normally run Power Master 15% nitro and I add two ounces of Sig Castor oil to bring the total oil contet to around 20% like the manuals note. I fly both my 2 strokes and my 4 strokes on the same fuel.
I was curious to read in MAN that the 46AX needs an OS #3 short plugs instead of the regular #8's that I usually use in my 2 stroke what plug are you and your clubmates running in your engines?
Thanks Dave

The Powermaster 15% is good. We typically run Omega 15%, but I prefer the Powermaster. Good plugs would be the:

K&B 1L
K&B HP
O.S #8
O.S #3
McCoy #9

I don't notice much of a difference between any of them.

Well I have a Patriot with an OS-50SX and it is a screamer for a ringed engine... I run a Tower muffler and get a 9x8 apc easily to 15.7K on 15%, but would rather fly it on a 10x8 apc (performance is actually similar-)

I can't imagine the AX being competitive with the SX but keep us posted-

Well, I decided to go with the OS 50SX and my Macs Pre Tuned Quiet Pipe It should really scream. I will start with an APC 10x8 and Power Master 15% ( I like the Power Master also Dave) It should scream once its broken in. Thanks for all the info guys I appreciate the help I will keep you all updated as to how the engine runs on the tuned pipe and a 10x8 APC.
Thanks Joe

I picked up a slightly used O.S. .50 sx last week, so I'll be curious to see how it goes. I guess if I was going to pay $150 for the O.S., I'd spend the extra 85$ to get the Sport Jett .46.

Dave, I had thought about a Sport Jet but I already have the new Macs tuned pipe and header for the 50SX. I would think that a 50SX on a pipe should be close or faster than a Sport Jet. What's your opinion of the 50SX does it look better than the 46? Man there are so many choices for a 40-46 size engine these days its hard to make a decision, I havent bought a 40-46 sized engine in 10 years except my ducted fan OS 46VX's
Well see how it runs I am sure it will run good.

I got the SX in a trade (Kinda pricey otherwise-) but it performs MUCH better than I had expected, even on the $13 muffler

I dunno what will happen with the pipe-system you have there.... please keep us posted!

A Patriot really deserves a Jett-50 IMHO-

Well, if I need to go really fast I will just fly one of my ducted fans either glow or electric And that 100:00 dollars can go into my turbine fund I think the 50SX on the tuned pipe will scream with a 10x8 I will keep you guys all updated in my progress.
Viper

PS: I need to get myself a Quickee 500 I haven't flown one in 5 years,

Yes, let us know how the 50SX spins on a pipe.
For comparison, I'm running a 4 yr. old OS46FX, with Mac's pre-tuned pipe, APC 10x8, turning 13,500 to 14,000 (depending on time of year and daring with leaness).

My OS-50SX (Tower Muffler) was turning an APC 10x8 at 13.6K on 15%, OS-8, Sea level warm day 75 deg. did not fiddle with it much, that was a hair rich right before takeoff (Patriot) I hit 15.7K with a 9x8 APC- On a tuned pipe I would be anxious to see the result with the 50SX-

I love the engine- I got it off a plane I bought, I was not going to buy one new... now I would!

It is only a little bit behind my Webra-50GT, neither can compare with my Jett-50 though
