der ste,

I would like to try your props on my OS 91 DF speed plane. How much.

Razor
Its not that hard to do . I put a rossi .81 DF in the f-20 with a 10x9 , I had to cut the nose off by 2 inches. Push the eng. back just fit between the wall. made new rails for the motor to be mounted.

Hi Angel,

no problem. As mentioned in many of my earlier posts it is highly recommendable to exclusively use carbon fiber speed props for any 15 cc ducted fan engines - mainly for safety reasons but also for (much) better results.

However, it is fundamental to accurately adjust the correct prop size for a particular speed project. From experience a speed prop X does rarely work well in combination with different speed plane constructions...

So, in order to achieve an effective running combo (engine/pipe/airframe/prop) I need some data of your speed plane (wing + stab span, airfoil thickness % of wing and control surfaces, fuse maximum width and height) as well as of your expected maximum rpm in flight (unloaded). Also it would be helpful to know your mph-target.

With these boundary conditions allowing to estimate the airframe drag it is possible to determine the dimensions of that carbon fiber prop best suited for your speed plane.

The price will be same as Bolly props based on diameter ...

SNJ, Nice, simple and very fast looking[8D]!

You almost have to think that the speed.40s have been already optimized. The limiting factor right now is probably the weight of the piston and pin. Another thing holding them back is running naturally aspirated. I like the idea of experimenting with a battery powered supercharger, this way you could trick a .40 into thinking that it is a .60. A .40 with this extra punch should be able to handle some serious prop pitch, at least for awhile?

I do only when the retracts fail! That happens often.

If all out speed is the goal what do you all think about having an airframe with eject-able wings? Ok don't laugh I'm just throwing the idea out there, so imagine a sleek airframe that would take off normally, hand launched or with wheels and after it gets air-born it would achieve its "high drag" top speed, thats when you hit a switch on your transmitter and eject the outer 75% of the wings and fly it like a missile with maybe small ailerons close to the fuselage. After this "missile" expends all of its fuel you hit the other switch on your transmitter and a parachute is ejected from the rear of the fuselage and the aircraft lands like a one of those R/C parachute rigs.
How much more speed do you think could be achieved by eliminating a chunk of the airfoil at high speeds?

You'd probably need a .60 sized conrod.. Check out what it takes to prep a Merlin for Reno:

Note also that a supercharger soaks up power, too - if optimized for higher altitudes, they'll put out less power at lower altitudes because there's more power wasted turning the impeller.

Yes, the rod would be the weak link, some extra material would have to be added to a 40s' case to allow cutting interior clearance for a beefy rod. The battery powered blower gets its' power from onboard batteries, so the engine isn't taxed. I think a clever system of air intake ducting and electric blower would add considerable boost at 200 mph. An onboard mixture control/kill system would make the fine tuning a simple matter.

Hi Randy,

it is a hotliner called 'Laser', designed in the year 1994 for F5B with 8 - 27 cells. Span is 73", airfoil is RG 15. Also available as sailplane version. The pictured IC engine converted Laser belongs to a guy from Vienna/Austria. He powered his Laser with the stock West .50 V1 engine + pipe unit. This engine basically is a higher timed Webra .50 engine...
