Default First speed plane for a YS45 ??

What plane should I be looking at for my first speed plane?

I would like a kit, not an ARF.

I have a YS45 SE with a tuned pipe that I have been using
on my AeroSport 40 for a while, flyies great, but I would
like to put the YS on a speed plane where it belongs!

Thanks for your help

I should have said I like the looks of the jet style aircraft, and our club
has a grass field.

Thanks again

I second the GP Patriot!!

My friend has one, with a YS 45 and retracts and it moves!! He absolutely loves his!

Mine has an OS 46FX with fixed gear and he smokes me in the air!

Patriot all the way! It will have plenty of power to get off grass, is a kit, and could be considered a speed-plane

I have also flown a Whiplash with my YS-45 and it was QUICK!

If you want a kit..... Patriot .40 all the way for the YS45. (just like everyone else said Nice jet looks.....can be dolled up a bit to look like an F-4, A-4, F-16 or even an F-86. Check back on some past patriot threads. Some good photos in there. aircraft performs well off of grass or hard surface.

If you can find an old Direct Connection Tiger Shark F-20 (.40 size kit) on ebay or somewhere.... that is an execllent aircraft too... just been out of production for a while. Hard to find.

Add another vote for the Patriot. Not many that are faster where I fly. I've built other Great Planes kits & I thought this was the crappiest but in the end it's the best flying of all! If your going with a Patriot you'd better hurry, Tower has them in stock right now but don't know for how long then will be discontinued again.

Arghh! havinfun has one of the best looking Patriots of all time- I should strip down one of mine and do a Blue Angels opposing solo covering job- (Oh yeah, I cover like crap nevermind--)

The DC F-20 Bob mentioned is reportedly a VERY good airplane--- Flyboy Dave has one and it screams! Rossi-45 full pipe gets 18K+ on what I think is MA 9x8

Back to the Patriot, I believe I have read every thread (and there are alot) about the GP Patriot and in the 40-50 class the YS-45SE on a Macs pipe ( 7.5CC or 8.5CC?) is second only to the Jett-50 when used on the Patriot!

It is worth mentioning that a quickee-500 type airplane is a good 1st speed-plane also.... And at some point I would recommend a delta like a Diamond Dust (Kit), or ACM Whiplash (Composite, paint ready) They look ugly to some until they FLY one!

WOW guys, thanks for the great info!

The patriot does look great and I just happen to have
a set of trike retracts.

I was hoping I could wait and order in a few months, but
I don't want to miss out on the kit.

If you don't mind NOT having landing gear (Belly land) the Magnum and Angel's Rifle are real quick.....and pretty much jet-looking.

The magnum is ARF... but its pretty well built.

(yes, you can put fixed gear on either). Photos of both in the threads here.

Thanks for the compliment, but if I had a better camera you'd see more than a few wrinkles & bubbles in the covering.[]

The Magnum sure looks good... and if an YS 45 can spin a 9x8 at 18K that will surely make it go.

As you can see mine is ageing gracefully... it looks like crap but it goes like stink...

Ok, I ordered a Patriot a few days ago.... I will
be giving it to my wife for my Xmas present.

In the mean time I will search the forum for all the
building tips, and I'm sure I will be back asking
questions!

Thanks again for the help

Bringing this post back as I have the same question, but as the Patriot is no longer available any other suggestions for a KIT or ARF?

The F-20 from Juno R/C www.junorc.com

Derek also has the Tsunami .40 available - not a jet type plane, but very quick in its own right.
