Hi All,

I’ve been very busy the last few months, buying, rebuilding, fixing and my first ever covering job (came out much better than I thought). I’m waiting for the first good weather of 2005 and I’ll be out with loads of new planes ready to fly.

I’ve bought a Weston MagnumR (at last) but can not afford to buy the West V1 engine. I have the following engines available to install in this plane. Which one of these would you recommend and could you estimate the speed with the engines. I will be sharing this plane with a friend, who has never flown a out and out speed plane before.

OS 40 LA
Irvine 40
MVVS 40 with Tuned pipe
Rossi 40 with standard pipe

Well in my opinion, its a coin toss because none of them are noted for any reliable power for speed. Thy run fine but thats about it. Can you swing the cost of a TT46pro?

Spent all my budjet for the next 3 or 4 months buying this plane, another plane and a few other bits and pieces. So it really is going to be one of those engines.

I know the Rossi very well and have found it to be a great engine. I'm leaning towards this engine but I'm worried about my friend who will be using this plane also.

The Rossi 40 will work ok, but its going to result in a nose-heavy airplane.

The MVVS would be ok. Make sure it is bench run first and runs well.

From your list, I'd personally go with the Irvine .40, and put a tuned muffler or pipe on it somewhere down the road.

Hard to estimate speed based on engine. But figure if you can get a 9x7 to turn up around 16K rpm on the ground, you will get something in the 100-120 mph range.

I have another Rossi installed in plane that is turning 16,400 on a tuned pipe with a 9 x 6, it was turning over 17,000 using a 8 x 8. Never had the others running on a small prop.

You guys really think the Rossi will not help the Magnum to perform well? I believe you I wa just surprised... I have not run the 40 just the 45-

Another gent. on here ran the Magnum with an Irvine (not sure 40/46/53) try a search for that-

I would think that all except the OS-LA would fly the airplane just fine, remember launch and overall speed can be tamed with a diff. prop. (I.E. 10x6)

Is the other bloke experienced at all with speed planes?

The rossi 40 is probably the best power of the bunch..... I was just a bit concerned over the weight.

The W-50 engine is pretty light weight, and the plane balances pretty well with that from what I am told.

Definitely don't go with the OS LA 40!!!! It's a gutless wonder!! The Rossi will probably be the quickest (MVVS .40 is another popular motor for speed planes, but I'm looking to buy the Quickie 500 version of the MVVS for my Diamond Dust)

I think I'll dry fit the Rossi to check the weight, thanks for the advice.

My mate has not flown a speed plane at all, but he wants to give it a go, so he's suppling me with a Magnum

Whatever motor you decide on, I'm sure it will be fine.....to fly it.....HOWEVER (and that's a BIG "however"), these require some speed to stay afloat, so you MUST land somewhat hot! To get a "visual", CA 2 feathers to the top of a brick and then give it a toss. There, that shoulda done it.

Personally, I wouldn't recommend it for a "first" speed plane, but to each their own.

i put a dubb jett 50 in my 2nd hand magnum

skip the 40LA it just does not make the power or RPM you want

the 1st owner of it had a 46LA on it and it was to fast for him (& to slow for me).

MVVS and Pipe may be a good start
