Little Tony Racer
Hi,
I've been looking on ebay and have bought this little plane, does anyone know anything about it? The seller says it's a Little Tony.
I'm going to use it as my speed trainer, as it's currently powered by a 1964 OS 35, Not for long...
I just can't wait for some better weather, and a break from work :-)

Hi!
It looks like an old Formula 1 pylonracer. Span is around 135cm I think and weight should be around 2,2kg. Right?
Put on a MVVS 6,5cc "Q-500"engine if you want a good sport pylon racer with good throtteling ability. An APC 9x7, 9x6,5 or 9x6 prop would be fine on such an engine/plane.
Glowplug a Rossi 6 and fuel 0-5% nitro. Tank a Tettra "bubbleles" 170cc tank. Speed will be around 225km/h with this engine and prop combination.
For faster speeds go with a Nelson or JETT engine....!

RE: Little Tony Racer
Hey ....... nice find.
Looks like on of the older Terry Prather Toni kits. Nice plane. Was always one of my favorites in F-1.
A few others made F-1 Tonis along the way. Since its over in the UK, it might be one of the FAI version from the 70's.
OS 35 ? well...... im sure it will fly with it.
You can have fun with it with any good .40 or .46 in the nose. There are a 3 sempra-q500 SS-40 engines on ebay from one of the better florida racers. Good bargans for some speed/fun. I think Snoop here has a QJ-40 q-500 for sale in the marketplace too.

RE: Little Tony Racer
I've got a spare Rossi engine that I think will find it's way in there. I actually got a Rossi 53 too, on a full pipe, I'll have a look at this to see if it fits.
If the OS 35 is a 20 size case, I've got a use for that too...

Hi!
A .90 engine is not suited for this airplane, it will be like flying a brick!
For speed and good handling ...a .40 engine with minipipe is the way to go...much faster than with any .90 engine!!!!
I competed with several of these Modelcraft Little Toni kits in pylonracing some years ago...very nice flier at 2,2kg with a MVVS Q-500 engine.

RE: Little Tony Racer
Hi,
Thanks everyone, I got this plane in the post last night, and she's a real beauty. I'm very happy with here.
I'm going to fly it on the current engine to get use to flying this type of plane before I put in a 40
Here is another project plane of mine at the moment, a Reno Racing Spitfire Sort off. Not bad for my first recovering job?

RE: Little Tony Racer
Hi dave,
Good spot, it is a kyosho Spitfire. It's really old and I got given it, the fuze it OK but the wing was a right state, more patches than Windows XP. If you look at the side of the wing you'll also notice that he's clipped the wings.
I ripped off all the old covering (weighted a ton!!) and put on the red stuff, it looks about 100 imes better than I thought it would. The wings thm self were in really good nick, I expected I would need to do all sorts of repairs.
It's not yet finished, I've got a cowl for it and some other touch ups are needed before she's ready for a sortie.
I've got another Kyosho Spit with a OS 4 stroke in it, retracts etc. It will be interesting to see how they compare, because this one is much lighter.
It's sort of been my fun winter project, and it's been just that, great fun.

RE: Little Tony Racer
I love how that plane flies, it also does awesome snap rolls. Rock solid, similar to a slow Q40, and lands like a trainer. My only concern with it has been the flimsy tail feathers, but they seam to have held up pretty good.
How were you able to strip that sticky, gooey, covering off ?

Stipping off the covering was a lot of work, took about a day to get it off and prep the surface for new covering.

RE: Little Tony Racer
I flew my Little Tony for the first time last weekend and I've got to say I was disapointed by the speed of the model.
It flew very nicely, easy to control, no real bad vices, a little hard to land but not very fast.
I know that the engine is not a good speed engine but I was still expecting more speed. I was using a 10 * 6 prop, I am thinking about going to a wooden (very light) 8 * 8 or 8 * 9. What do you guys think? I can not afford to replace the engine yet.

RE: Little Tony Racer
10x6 sounds like too much prop for an old OS .35, if that's what is in it (it's a bit hard to keep up with all the different things you've got going on in this thread). Smaller diameter and bigger pitch will help, but you're never going to get awesome performance from the engine. I would be reluctant about switching to wooden props until you get more time with the plane, especially if you fly from grass. Nose overs and wood props don't mix well.

RE: Little Tony Racer
FI,
If you are using the OS .35, you need to stick to an APC 9x6 or 10x5. Anything else from these two props mentioned will not do the job that well. A 10x6 is too much prop and so is the 8x8 or 8x9 for that engine. The rule of thumb is, if you go up one inch diameter, you need to drop one inch in pitch or vice versa (i.e. 10x6 to 9x7 or 9x6 to 10x5 etc.)
Hope this helps!

RE: Little Tony Racer
we used to use the little toni for sport 40 pylon racing but now it is not competative because the wing is foam anddoes not have a carbon spar. I would not recomend putting a dubb jett into it but maybe any other sport engine would do fine e.g irvine .40 with a mini pipe you should get 140-150 mph out of it and they fly really nice. HAVE FUN

RE: Little Tony Racer
I have flown lots of Toni's from pylon racing and use a denight (similar) for sport. Mine has a OS40 V with pipe. I use an 8x8 on it. With your 35 you will have to come down in diameter and go up in pitch. Maybe an 8x7 but you have to get the revs. When you get a chance install a Q40 and you will find it will move out and also smooth. This is a picture of mine.
