Default Whats the Biggest engine on a DD?

I am looking for the fastest motor that I can put on my Diamond Dust. It seems like everyone is using the Jett BSE 50. I have a Nelson 40 on a Viper and it will do about 175mph, I am looking for faster. What would be the best combo? I will probably be using JR 8411's for the elevons.

Thanks
Addison

I am now putting a Rossi 53 ducted fan motor on my dust. I am having a little trouble mounting due to the rear intake. I will let you know how it goes. Just tuning the motor on the stand I was getting 18,000 + rpm with an 8x9 prop. I am hoping to break 200 mph. Let ya know

Thats about how fast I am wanting to go. I Really like the Jett 50 BSE but it is $310 + remote needle valve.

Thanks

The needle valve and the intake are hitting. I have the dremmel on high. Look at mess I am making!! I am learning that it cost a lot of $$$ to go fast

See ya later,

Default Roadrunner..

There is a pic of my DF installation in this thread:

http://www.rcuniverse.com/showthread...99&forumid=162

Really wasn't that much trouble...but I added some beams under the ply engine mount plate that went back and intersected the bottom of the plane a few inches back, then connected the beams with some 1/6" ply...made it nice and strong and gave back some of the strength I lost by removing most of the firewall..

Default engine size

A big engine is not what is required here. Its rpm that gives the speed. The nelson qm-40 is the best for this application. With the timing and porting this will turn a 7x9 at 23,000 on the ground. Your 8x9 at 18,000 is just not going to get you to 200.

I was told that if I go down a prop size (from 9x9 to 8x9) I will gain a fist full of rpm. I am new at the game and the 18,000 on the 9x9 will be left in the DUST !! (I hope).

How much does the Nelson qm 40 cost ???

Thanks RR

I do however agree with you on the size. I was leaning towards a 32 ish ducted fan, or somthing that will turn the big RMP'S. But I fell into the 53 and thought what the hell !!

I will submit a thread on the performance as I fly and tweak!!!!!

Default nelson

The nelson qm40 cost 390 with a throttle carb. You need to use carbon fiber props at these rpms. Diameter makes a hugh difference. Just shaving 1/8 off the tips can make all the difference. My Jett Fire 60 was unable to turn high rpms. The 50 is the better choice for this application. I currently have a ys 45 on my DD and the nelson on the whiplash. I have not reinforced the hinges on the whiplash yet and am afraid to fly it until that is done. I will also post data when i get it. I have a radar gun for airspeed.

This is what Dub Jett emailed and told me, "The best engine we have is the Race Fire .45. It is a special engine made for the DD. The BSE version is 40 more.

It has a shorter stroke than the .50 and will turn the higher rpms needed to go really fast.

The engine is 275 and the pipe is 70. It comes with full twin needle carb and will throttle and idle very well."

Default pipe

The nelson doesnt use the full length pipe. I have found it to be alot of trouble to get it set up and running right and keep it running right. This is based on the 50 and 60. I am interested to see how the 45 works out. I am looking for a set up that i can take to field and fly like any other plane only go 180 mph. So far i have spent very little time flying and alot of time tuning and trying different setups. I think the ys will be very low maintance and good performance but not great.

I have a friend who has a OS .91DF on a dust,I have no Idea how fast it is,but it is waaaaaay fast!!!He had a plane that was Radarded at 188mph,and he says this one is way faster. The problem is keeping a prop on it.It shatters most of them right after launch.I am going over there today,I will try and get a pic of it and post it here.
Mike.

OS .91DF would be awesome! Can you get some more info about weight, servos, balance, etc?

Thanks

I imagine there are so many different engine choices for this plane. It mainly depends on the wallet!

Default question

I bought this engine from nelson. i know it's a .40 size and I had them put a carb on it. it's the OS 7D carb. it's my first Nelson engine and It runs great. it has a great idle and jumps up at the push of the stick. My question is this. I hear different refferences to different Nelson engines. (qm40, quicky500). I don't really know much about racing terms or difference between racing engines. what makes a quicky 40 engine different from a quicky 500 engine?
and then which nelson engine do I have. I've never tached this enigne because it's so fast with a 8.75/8.25 prop that i'm still intimidated with the speed and won't hold it at full throttle for too long. what rpm's do you think i'm turning with this prop?
thanks
Paul
