Cheap thrills, 1/2A Shrike or Shrike10
You know the feeling, the current plane (H9 Aresti/TT.46) is just not enough to get the blood pumping, so its time for something new. I am not looking for the ultimate speed plane, but something cheap and fast. I am thinking of one of the Shrikes as they are cheap, fast to build and fast. But which one is better? I was looking at the 1/2A version with Norvel 0.074 or the Shrike 10 with a Norvel 15 on it. Any reccomendations? I had looked at the Norvel 15 on the 1/2A, but that seems like a lot of weight, what about the .25 on the 10?

If you really want to go fast with 1/2A power, build a 1/4" thick balsa sheet wing plane with about 120 sq" and shoot for RTF weight of 10 ozs or less. The HS 55 servos are plenty strong and there are lots of micro RXs that will fill the bill. I also use 150 to 300 MAH NIMH battery packs. I have a video of a FORA .049 equipped plane like I just described at the 1/2A FORUM contest site, it's called the MUSTANG RACER. The SHRIKE planes are a compromise with their thick wings. The planform is nice, but the wing needs to be 5% thick, instead of "sport plane thick".

I just finished a Shrike 10 with a K&B 3.5cc. It screams. It's not unusual for people to go up to a .25 in the Shrike 10. If I did another, and hadn't been able to find the 3.5cc that I used, I would probably put a K&B .18 in it. http://www.mecoa.com/kb/aero/aircraft.htm
