They are not LiPo's, and it is not a glider.
It is a purpose built F5D electric pylon racing aircraft.
You can find the plane on: http://home.planet.nl/~zandv055/frames.htm
It costs 350 Euro's, and the guy who builds them can't keep up with demand.

Well, the rest of the world calls it a pylon racing plane.
While LiPo's have come a long way and have opened up new areas in the worlds of electrics, they are not suited for this kind of abuse... These things are pulling close to 100 amps these days, so LiPo's are out...

Come on Fiend, it has a motor. It's not a sailplane. It's a motor-glider.

F5D is an FAI racing class... The rules state the you can use a maximum of 7 sub-C size cells, or any number of smaller cells, as long as the battery weight doesn't exceed 425 grams. Minimum RTF airframe weight is 1000 grams. Wingloading must not exceed 65 grams/square decimeter.

RE: Electric power XXX speed (video)
Hi Guys,
That's my plane in the video. It's the prototype of the Nemesis F5D pylonracer. Setup in the 20-3 video was a Hacker B40 FAI 9 cell motor on 9 GP2200 cells. Prop was an APC 5x5. On the ground this thing pulls about 110-120 Amps turning more than 30 Krpm. Speed is about 170 MPH (Without diving of course ) on a good day.
It's officially not a sailplane but as you can see it glides very well
Paul

Paulus, Very nicely done airplane and techniques for building it. Can you share design information like airfoil, aspect ratio, balance, etc. Your milling of the plugs is also very interesting. Did you build/make the hardware/software or is it commerically available to the average modeller? Thanks!

Highplains,
I'm not the producer of the plane. Just the test pilot
Here's a link to a picture with detailed info:
[link]http://www.f5d.org/modelle/nemesis.gif[/link]
A lot of info about building the first Nemesis and the Belgian design "Jibe" can be found here:
[link]http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=270446[/link]
These two ships share the same fuselages with different wing designs.

paulus,
Thanks for the info. My problem with electrics in the past has been performance and sound. Your plane has overcome both of these shortcomings.

Thanks for the web site Paulus. I just read through the 31 pages, my eyes are shot now, I'm going to go fill the whirlpool bath and think about it for a while (with the eyes closed). I agree with Mike that electrics really have something to offer these days, and they will continue to improve. Some of the nano-technology is about to move into the battery problems. I read an article the other day on some new li-po that will really improve the energy density and current capibility from what is available today.
