Shike 10-15 engine?
Hi all, I'm building Shrike 10-15 and will be to the covering stage soon. I was going to go with the Magnum .15 that I have. But an earlier mishap left the crank in a slightly bent condition. I have not been able to locate a source that has the crank in stock for this.
My goal is a nice flying plane. I want to keep the wing loading down. I know a lot of you are going with the bigger engines, but I am not ready for that yet. I can always build another around a bigger engine at a later date.
The only complaint against the Magnum was the running on with the throttle closed. But in all fairness, it may have been my setup that caused that. The main needle was extremely sensitive. I think the same main needle is used in the bigger engines also.
I'm thinking of the OS LA15- inexpensive, heard it makes slightly more power than the Magnum.
MVVS 15- same price but need to add the cost of a muffler.
OS CVA15- great power, user friendly.
RJL Conquest 15?? Awesome power, not available at this time.
MVVS 21 ~ 2oz weight penalty.
I don't care to tinker a lot with engines, but feel I'm fairly proficient at setting the needles right. I don't mind a learning curve, as long as it leads somewhere other than frustration. I'm leaning toward the OS CVA, but am interested in the MVVS 21.
Any comments or suggestions as to which one (or another) I should get?
Thanks in advance, MikeB

Many of the local combat people use the .15 LA. While it's often maligned, those who actually run them seem pleased. One of the fastest combat planes I've seen in that group has an LA on it.

WMB, you forgot the Novarossi .15....
Seriously, the .15la has an excellent power to weight ratio. Also, to be considered, is the Norvel .15 Bigmig and AME. The bigmig being comparable to the la and the AME to the CVA.

Thanks guys, The budget side of me is leaning towrd the LA15. I looked at the NovaRossi site, That 15 is a little on the portly side. I really want this to come out light. Still considering the CVA though.
I've read bad things about the Norvel muffler design. I've got enough of that with my SuperTiger.
Thanks again, MikeB

I've got two of the LA's. Great engines!
BTW, you gotta think of the Novarossi as a de-stroked .32 with a bad attitude! 33k RPM! Definitely not in the same league as the .15la.

the LA .15 is a stud with the SSC prop (MAS blue 8-3) turning right up to the max 17500.with other props it can be less than fully satisfying.
the norvel 15 has a very annoying muffler mounting system.
I'd look in the combat forums to learn what the open A guys are using.

Thanks all, I've got an LA15 coming from Tower. I was doing some research and came across an article on the LA15 at the RCCA website. Now I can't find it[:@]. Any body have that link?
Thanks again, MikeB

RE: Shike 10-15 engine?
I have got an MVVS q-500 .40 thats original intentions are now done for, so Iv'e got a fairly hot engine with no home. The other day I was looking through some stuff and came across a shrike 10-15 kit that I had forgotten that I had. Coincidence? I think not! I kinda got a big smile and thought with some reinforcement and that engine turned into a rear exhaust this would make one heck of a rocket, what do you guys think about the idea?

Thanks MikeB for this excellent link [sm=thumbup.gif]
The guy advocates breakin'in with a 6x3 on the test stand... I did it with a 8x6 in the air [&o]... Too much load on my poor .15LA []

How about an MVVS .15, set up for rear exhaust (the way that engine was designed for)...? A lot lighter than the .21, and very capable (for its cost) when you swap the carb for a venturi... And give Morris Hobbies a call to see if he has any of those .15 Rossi pipes left... they are a direct match...

RE: Shike 10-15 engine?
CP- I looked at the K&B 18 and it weighed about 2 oz more than the LA15. All the engines I checked out that promised more power were all a little heavier. When/if I get good and used to this one, I may do another with the larger engines.
willflyforfood- Go for it. It would make a good read. I am a longgg ways from even thinking of something like this. I did order the 40 size Shrike at the same time as this small one. I've got a YS45 for it or my Patriot kit.
I am ready to start covering tonight. MikeB

Strykaas, considering they're made in Italy, it's probably much easier for you to find them than me. The U.S. importer is www.planethobby.com

RE: Shike 10-15 engine?
Strykaas, sorry 'bout that. I figured that you guys would have them being closer and all. The guy from planethobby apparently buys them in bulk and his lineup doesn't always match what's on the NR website. The .12 may not be a regular stock item for him. I've considered shooting him an email to ask, but my engine funds are low and I already have a .15 that needs an airplane.

RE: Shike 10-15 engine?
That's a hot "little"engine,[the ROSSI .15] but it weighs more than a FOX .36 COMBAT SPECIAL! At 9 ozs, plus the exhaust system, I would need specific info on what performance it can deliver with what prop. It's over twice the price and 2 ozs heavier than the MVVS .15. I would just need to know more. Companies that want my business will give more specific details. In the same league price wise with the NR is the CYCLON .15, and they DO give specific info about what their engine will do, with which prop, etc..

RE: Shike 10-15 engine?
Moreover prices are a bit too high for such engines, even if powerful... I would rather invest in a Jett .50 actually... IMHO, these Rossi engines are probably better suited for small sized aircraft competition where displacement is limited.

RE: Shike 10-15 engine?
I"m getting in late, but since the guy decided to use the 15la on his shrike, I thought I'd put in 2 cents. We use OS 15's on our pylon racers. There are several things I do to mine to get max rpms....I have one 15la that turns 17300 and another that turns 18800, both with MAS 7 * 5 props. Let me know if you're interested and I'll tell you the mods I made.
