Are you snipping too much off of the beginning (you only need to take a split second off)? If that doesn't work, make sure that the beginning of the file has some substantial amplitude (keep snipping until you get to that part).
To see if you have the right sample rate, you just have to listen to the recording and see if its tone (pitch) matches the original sound (i.e. not too low and not too high).

Thanks for the idea.
It may well be that I am snipping too much. I am just using the Microsoft sound recorder to edit my .wav file. It is not very precise with regards to editing the sound file. I suppose I am going to need a nicer piece of sound editing sw - maybe something with a 'scope' display.

Yeah I use a program called "Digital Audio Editor" where I can see the waveform of the sound file and then I just take off a "snipet" from the beginning.
