Shrike. Irvine 53 or 46fx?
I know it's not strictly extreme speed, but this seemed like the best fit. Anyhow, I am going to be building a Shrike 40, and wondered what would be the best fit. I have an Irvine 53 and an OS 46fx at my disposal. I am leaning towards the OS, I think the Irvine will probably be too big, and too heavy. How do Shrikes end up balancing, do they need a little extra weight up front, or should I try to minimize that?

RE: Shrike. Irvine 53 or 46fx?
I have just finished building one. I am using a OS .46 AX for my power house. The plane is extremely nose heavy even with the battery being placed as far back as possible. Alot of weight still needs to be added to the tail. here are a couple of pictures of the finished product. Now I have to wait until Spring to fly it.

flyer495th,
1- You should have moved the firewall a little backwards ; that's what many do here (I did it on my .10 Shrike / Webra .32).
2- You'd better not use that "heavy" spinner if you don't want to add too much weight at the rear ... Use a cheap plastic dubro spinner
Some here use .75 engines on their Shrike "40". Yes .75... Food for thought.
So, NCBrit, go with the Irvine (more powaaa), and move the firewall backwards. If back weight is required, install a bigger batt and use lead if required. Wing loading will still be manageable, don't worry... I also have a Shrike .40, and I still don't know which engine will get it moving... Sport Jett .50 or MVVS .91 ? mmmhhh....

I agree with STRYKAAS, by the way the .75 powered one is down here in Charlotte, along with a .61 ducted fan powered one, a bunch of Outlaws, and a couple of Magnums, as well as a twin Outlaw!!! Come down some time!

I think the plane pictured is the ARF and that makes it a little hard to move the firewall.
You might try a wood prop and a tuned pipe or mousse can muffler. Both of these will move the CG back a little. I would also use a 1650 mil NiMH battery, put way back.
Also check to see if you can find a lighter front wheel.

I built one with a Tower .46 It had a aluminum spinner and require a little lead in the tail. Nothing major. I didn't move the firewall. I still don't know why there is gear on the arf.... What for?

I have an OS .46 SF ABC-P on mine, with tuned Macs Quiet Pipe. I got it to balance without adding weight, by moving the firewall back (1" forward of the leading edge at the fuselage). The battery is at the very rear of the radio compartment. This combination of engine and airplane works very well, fairly fast (in the 125-130 range) and climbs like a scalded cat with an APC 9x7. I'm sure you'd be happy with the OS .46FX on yours.

Oh, one other thing, in spite of moving the firewall back, I still managed to fit a 10 oz. tank, the fuel pump and fuel filler in between the firewall and the front spar.

OK, did not realize it was an arf either...
In this case, not much room to fiddle ... I would simply remove that draggy landing gear, it would help.

Mine will be from the kit. But it's definately worth discussing the arf in this thread. Thanks for all the replies. I think I'll put the 53 in it then.

I have the same plane and just flew it for the first time.My second landing the gear folded up on me and broke off the firewall.I cut a 1 inch square hole above the landing gear and 30 minute epoxyied the l/g blocks in.They were on thin c/a in place originally.Very poor design.I flew it today and it flew great.Still trying to figure what prop works best.I have the 46 ax also.Today ran a APC 10x7.I am running a Du-Bro 2.5 inch spinner.Good luck.

Seanpatsdad - Thank you for the message about the firewall & front landing gear. I will modify my unit next week if not this morning.
