Default 250 mph speed! - German SPEEDCUP 2006 scheduled Sept 15th 16th 17th

Hello extreme speed fans,

the date for the German Speed–Cup 2006 has been scheduled. The three days event will again take place in OSNABRUECK / Germany.

September the 15th 16th and 17th 2006

Everybody planning to experience speeds up to 250 mph in person should prepare a trip to Osnabrueck. Maybe visiting Hamburg, Berlin Cologne etc afterwards...

Have you seen such speed of a prop driven speed plane before?

Though its not a FAI event, the potential speeds achieved may be considered as inofficial world speed records.

Just to remind: The official FAI speed record is:

Sub-class F3A (Aeroplane, piston motor) < 10ccm
N°145: Speed : 343.92 km/h / 213.71 mph
Date of flight: 21/09/1971
Pilot: Vladimir GOUKOUNE (USSR)
Co-pilots: Valery MYAKININE
Course/place: Klementyeva (Russia)
source: FAI (December 2005)

The speed measurement device must meet the following requirements in order to correspond to the specifications of the FAI (Federation Aeronautique Internationale):
1. flight approach of 100 m in length + section of measurements of 200 m in length: Measurements to be taken during entering and during leaving the 200 m section.
2. during flight approach and section of measurement an altitude between 5 and 35 meters must be maintained. Speed measurement from both directions per flight. The mean value resulting from both fly through directions gives the record speed.
3. The speed measurement has to be carried out automatically allowing for 1/100 sec accuracy to eliminate the “human error” factor, meaning that hand operated equipment is not allowed.
4. The measuring system must be calibrated and the record dossier has to be described in detail.
5. The measuring system must be able to record if the allowed flight altitude of 5 to 35 m has been under-run or exceeded.

Please check out www.mfc-osnabrueck.com for additional information.

www.mfc-osnabrueck.com

HOME OF SPEED

For potential participants: Only 35 Mhz transmitters allowed in Germany – so no major issue.

There will be different cc classes:
up to 3.5 cc
3.5 to 6.6 cc
6.6 to 10 cc and
>10 cc.
Also an electric speed class will be established

Thus many cups and medals to win!

Everyone is most welcome, the more international speed freaks[sm=thumbup.gif] the better for pushing the envelope and for having fun.

Hi SLOMO! Thanks for keeping us informed about what is happening in the real world of flat speed. Compared with what you guys are doing, this forum should be named the "SPORT SPEED GANG" . I'm so far behind where you guys are at.......I can try to copy the airframes, but your top secret prop work is a different story [8D].

I wish there was a category for 1cc engines [&o]!!

Do you know DER STUERMANN? He used to post here with alot of great advice and knowledge, then vanished into thin air. Too bad, he always had something interesting to say and he added alot to this forum. Some folks didn't like him because he is a hard core extreme speed guy, and they felt like he was talking down to them. I always took his criticism of my work as instructive, and tore some of my work apart to bring it up to his standards. Hopefully he is doing well and tearing up the skies over GERMANY!

Or wealthy enough?

I'd love to see this event, and perhaps I'll work out a budget for the trip, but I am not holding my breath I could. Sigh...

I guess it's not official, but I believe this electric has been clocked at over 220mph.

My understanding is that this:

2. during flight approach and section of measurement an altitude between 5 and 35 meters must be maintained. Speed measurement from both directions per flight. The mean value resulting from both fly through directions gives the record speed.
Means the speed run must be done from level flight, not out of a dive. There are lots of prop planes that can break 213mph if they dive (of course I mean lots of speed planes, not lots of planes in general) but very few that can attain that in level flight.

There was an F1 pylon racer that although I didn't see it was supposedly clocked at 216mph at a jet rally last year. I'm sure most Q40's would easily break 220 out of a good dive, with the right engine apparently a Diamond Dust out of a dive could hit that.

So when you ask what the fastest prop plane out there is, it's somewhat of a loaded question, that plane doing 213 on the flat is probably capable of 230 or 240 out of a dive

@LGM
You´re absolutely right. 213mph in level flight from both directions!!!! No support from wind or dive.....that´s the point.

@TheTick
At the Speedcup 2006 in Osnabrueck, Germany you will see both: piston motors and electric !!! It ´s a fantastic show !!!

Hi,

I just would like to correct some misunderstanding. Diving is allowed as long as it does not violate the FAI rules.

Fact is: You must perform a full 300 m horizontal level flight, maintaining 5 to 35 m altitude. That means the 100 m approach plus the 200 m speed measuring section.

For example Mr. W. Kaeseberg’s FAI speed record of 320 kph in year 1968 was accomplished using a 10 cc SuperTigre speed engine and an 10*12.5 glass fibre prop. Yes, out of dives, but within the FAI regulations. He’s a true R/C speed pioneer, almost unbelievable 200 mph from todays point of engine and prop design.

Regarding the actual speed record, at that time (1971) the Russians accomplished an amazing speed performance. Without diving they would never ever have reached these speeds.

From todays viewpoint the maximum allowed wing load of 75 grams/dm² is THE main technical barrier if trying to set a new remarkable world speed record (let’s say about 240 mph through the 200 m distance without wind support) for prop driven speed planes.

Pictured below is the optimum flight path providing the absolute highest speeds, and being allowed by the FAI.

slomo

P.S. Any prop driven delta will never be as competitive as a conventional speed airplane. So please forget deltas for serious speed record attempts…

Mhh looking good [8D]. Very sleek ... I guess these engines do not require that much cooling.
The tail looks very thin. Is it carbon reinforced or whatever ?
And regarding the wing main spar, what is it made of ? Aluminium ?

Hallo strykass,

the modell is reinforced only with carbon. The tail is also 100 % carbon.
Only the motor speed pan is a aluminium castet part special made for this engine and model.

Best regards Michael

f3d,

I would like to compliment you on your model. I was wondering where the CG falls. It almost looks like it might be in front of the leading edge of the wing with the engine so far forward and so little weight behind. Go luck with your runs.

Hallo Daven,

the battery is installed in the bag. Also the bag is built very strong and not light with carbon.

So the CG is in the right position.

I will post next week some pictures of the 15 ccm BVM Speeder.

Best regards Michael
